to the sound of bloody theremins and yellowed newspapers...
Sometimes you find yourself living an unexpected life -- no longer sufficiently rooted (in people and places and things) to be able to exercise that faculty of constantly creating, 2 or 3 steps ahead of yourself, the road you're on and the days you inhabit, by virtue of pre-expectation. The world es exactly what you have always known it would be, and each step you have taken has only served to reinforce this... and then one day its all gone. And where do you live then, you? You live in the world, the unrooted, fleeting, ever-ambiguous world outside your head, and it is truly more strange and vivid than anything you ever imagined. And it has teeth...This book will disturb your sleep for months. Tina, Foot-Foot, Clay, Laura the Dog, et al inhabit a neighboring counter-earth to the planet David Lynch hails from. Ther serial/chapter format, the mad accumulation of details and plot tangents, the little girl with the pipe... Creepy as hell. Harum Scarum indeed...Wish everyone could have been there back when you had to wait 3-4 months between serial installments of this in Eightball. It was truly disturbing then.

A stomach-churning nightmare
I like reading and watching stuff that makes me feel like I'm dreaming. Clowes is one of the best artists to ever attempt to do that. This story is depressing, shocking and uncomfortable the whole way through. It is my second favorite Clowes story, after "The Gold Mommy," which can be found in his "Caricature" collection.

Maybe the sickest thing I've ever read
I got this comic book randomly after googling "graphic novel stream of consciousness" and clicking on the first result. It's exactly what I like: vague, surreal story, obscure references, dark humor. It might happen you'll find it too disturbing or just hate it - but I'm certain your opinion won't be in the neutral spectrum. Great idea for a coffee table book BTW.

It didn't do it for me
It was all right, ok, not bad; but for me to rate it as 5*..not going to happen. I read it twice in three days and, while it was all the other reviews say it is, it just left me feeling "ho-hum". It is an excursion into fantasy that seems to serve no purpose. The only revelation I could get was that most of life seems to be a compilation of mis-directed endeavors brought about by little understood compulsions from the subconscious mind and that, like life, resolution is often not what we envision or desire. Okay; but still..just "okay".

Weird, creepy, cool.
This book is really weird, and kind of disturbing. I think that another read-through is warranted. Clowes hits another home run.

WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY KENNETH?!
Finally got this. Read it years ago as it was published in the EIGHTBALL comics. This is very well printed on great stock. Worth every penny.

A grotesque grace moment
I always like Clowes's stuff and often love it, but, though Ghost World and the recent Patience come very close, nothing touches this. It reads like some oneiric shaggy dog story, improvised out of fragments of nightmares, with no governing logic, but never taking a misstep.

A freaky and compulsive ride!
This is the kind of comic that makes me genuinely afraid of people.Well, actually to be more specific and to quote Mr Bowie ... afraid of americans...because no matter how far out and twisted the characters and events may be ... i have an uneasy feeling that if you went a travelling and got lost in the woods some of these things could happen... somehow ... somewhere.Strange doesnt even start to describe 'Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron' but: stunning, surreal and nightmarish is a beginning. Hilarious nuggets of black humour make the eerie journey even more engrossing and I have a feeling that a couple of those characters are gonna stay with me for quite a while. Clowes characterizations are amazing... he can make anyone look... well just alittle bit wrong, disturbed, inbred and goofy!I think Clowes is an artist everyone interested in comics and/or the bizarre just has to explore...go buy it... but just dont read it when you're eating... it leaves a funny taste in the mouth.

Incomparable
Absolutely wonderful... a bizarre head trip from start to finish. My favourite of all Clowes's work, and I love everything by him! Beautifully illustrated too. Couldn't recommend more.

Mismo libro, diferente portada
