An Officer and a Gentleman [DVD] [1982]

A classic
I'm enjoying revisiting old favourite films via Amazon Prime. This one reminds me of my youth as I was a teenager when I first watched it and began my love affair with Richard Gere! I do enjoy the trivia that appears on screen via Amazon Prime about the movie, most of it I already knew but it led me to research more about Debra Winger's falling out with Richard Gere and the Producer and Director. Years ago I remember reading her and Gere had dated but that was obviously an untruth. Years later Winger admitted that she had been awkward and caused arguments but it seems the Producer kept telling her to lose weight etc so I think she felt outnumbered by all the males involved in the production and she did not enjoy making the film but you wouldn't know her and Gere didn't like her as their characters have a believable chemistry together. It was also interesting to read that Robert Loggia's role as Gere's father was also cut considerably. I remember the scene in the film where they pass out and feeling sorry for Gere's character that he had no family there but it turns out his father was there but the scene was cut. Apparently Loggia was annoyed about how much of his role was cut.I also remember when I first watched this on VHS that the love scene was more explicit than this and the DVD version but after reading that Winger negotiated her own Contract and was then annoyed to read about the love scene and the nudity I would say that in the intervening years between VHS and DVD copy, she negotiated having that scene cut!A film that I can watch over and over but never get bored but I suppose it is becoming a little dated.

Nice
Always a good film, best taken with a good deep full bodied red wine, a warm room, candles and light out or dimmed, watched with a close intermit friend who gets tearful and needs a good big hug at the end of the film. Nice!

Tough Military Training Film with Charming Romance
This Film is a reflection of cadet training in the 60s and 70s. Prejudice, arrogance, self interest. fear of failure humiliation, psychological pressure, triumphantly overcome ending in romance. It is all there and more. I responded to this film with echoes of my training days ! Dated it may be but I still like it.

Worth 1 last watch before it becomes too dated
Rather dated in places these days, but still holds its own most of the way through. Music took me back to simpler times and seeing that classic Richard Gere smile made me smile...... a lot. Cast chemistry is good so you contentedly float through a few bits that would not make it into films these days. The online cut is less raunchy than I remember, but no worse for it. Has been replaced in my heart by The Lucky One with Zac Efron. Richard Gere and a Triumph motorbike or Zac Efron and a great dog - you decide.
