It is true that I immediately recalled Shogun: A Novel of Japan, but this is a much shorter and easier book to follow.Probably a good idea to read the back pages with some helpful pronunciation tips because there are a few Japanese words throughout the story.Other great books for young adults with plenty of action include: Brotherband: The Outcasts: Book One and The Fire of Ares: Spartan 1 (Spartan Warrior).

Ever, since I first read this novel, years and years ago, I have recommended the whole series to young people, mostly who find it difficult to get into reading. The stories are exciting, moral and mind expanding.

The series itself shows promise and looks as if will turn into a good story. I love all things Japanese particularly those based in the Samurai era so I took this story to task. On the downside it is reminiscent of the tale of Samurai by James Clavell and also Last Shogun, I cannot recall the authors name. On the upside Chris Bradford builds his plot(s) nicely and introduces his characters to you, which allows you put yourself in the plot with them. I have purchased other books in the series but not started them yet. All in all a good read.

My 12 year old son is a reluctant reader and normally only likes comic book style books, but he is really hooked on this. He says the story is exciting and he can't wait to finish it!

I picked this book up in a library due to my strong interest in Japanese history, a few years later and I have the full collection sitting proudly in the centre of my book shelf.Without giving away too much, a young British sailor gets stuck in Japan and is taken in by a Samurai and the series follows Jack's story as he trains in the way of the Samurai and eventually strives to return home to his mother and sister.The writing style is ultimately aimed at a younger audience and therefore is not too graphic (although at times can be quite dark in a good sort of way) nor is it a difficult read. However, the story is incredibly rich and vibrant throughout the whole series and is full of interesting characters meaning this is not a problem at all.I would thoroughly recommend this to everybody.

I am a 9 year-old boy and at first I didn't want to read this book because I had never read a book without illustrations and I prefer facts rather than fiction, but my Mum started reading me the first five chapters. I could not wait for the next time when she was going to read me the rest, so I picked up the book and continued by myself. I eventually read all the seven books in just a couple of months!I liked this series because I can learn lots of facts about Japan in the 16th century, and about Samurai and Ninja, and also enjoy a great story!Young Samurai is a great book to read, because the hero lives a great adventure, so it is very good for 8-13 year olds boys and girls.

I can honestly recommend this series of 8 books for young and old. It is a MUST read.Sping 2013 I purchased book 1, the story totaly won me over, so that I obtained the other remaing 7 books to read.As I could not wait to find out what happened next.Currently I am re reading the series and it has not lost any of it's sprit of friendship, courafe and deternination to succeed, with a romance between two of leading characters.Rumour has it that book 9 will be published at some time in the future.Further more it is hoped that a film may follow at some time unknown. The best presentation would be a series of all the books, similar to series's produced by HBO.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and quickly bought and read the whole series, they are real page turners, I took the books everywhere and even read them whilst out waiting in queues.There is drama and excitement throughout this book and the series, the importance of friendship, trust and inner strength of character is a strong theme.The story transports you to another era, country and culture, you learn the language and overcome challenges as the main characters develops his knowledge and learns to cope with the perilous situation he is landed in.Have recommended this book and series to my friends for both them and their kids to read.

This may be seen as YA fiction but in fact it’s not simplistic by any means but good fun for all. I wanted to read more about the samurai but in the format of story not a lecture in book form. There aren’t that many bushido stories out there for adults. This book and hopefully the ones following fill that gap admirably. The writing is solid, the plotting interesting and intricate, the historical and martial arts research impeccable. Great and enlightening entertainment for all. Five stars.

Really enjoyed this book, the author has done good research as I am Japanese and confirm that all the rituals and words are real. This has for share inspired me and I can’t wait to read the second book.

young samurai is a amazing book that shows the life of a boy in a strange new world getting bullied and taunted every day as a gaijin. with his father dead life is tough. very beatifully written and has great concepts about bushido and friendship.

I've never really been interested in Japan or its history, or samurai for that matter, but this book seemed interesting so I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! From the very first page, this book grabbed hold of me and held on to the very end. I never knew Japan, samurai and ninja could be so interesting and exciting! Chris Bradford has a talent in writing good, nail-biting adventures that are both realistic and thrilling to read. He somehow manages to mix some history into the story without overdoing it. The characters are good and it's very easy to connect with the main person, Jack, whose life is turned upside-down. He not only sees his father being murdered - he is also thrown into a world where no one understands his language and everyone is a potential enemy. He does make a few friends, but he's got even more enemies. Many are acting hostile towards him, and not all those who seem friendly at first have good intentions. - Who can he trust and who shall he fear? Also, Jack has a secret which he swore not to tell anyone ... Given no other choice, Jack must learn the rules and taboos of a samurai in Japan during the 1600s in order to survive ... and to get back to England to his little sister.

Good read lots of action and plots aplenty . However poor lost kid in a strange land and exceeds in everything is a bit predictable.
