James Bond: Ultimate Roger Moore [DVD] [1973]

Worth it for the unique extras alone.
There are few that don't enjoy Bond and Moore brings his own special brand of suave to the role. Plenty has been said about which films are included - all the Moore ones, obviously - but it's what's with them that makes this set so special. Each feature film DVD is accompanied by the now-expected disc of 'extras', but on each of the discs there are two documentary-type features which - to the Bond aficionado - are priceless, since they contain not only a huge amount of previously unseen footage but also outtakes from a time when such things were the preserve of only the film makers themselves. In fact, it's the extras discs that make this set worth buying. The legendary Ken Adam (production designer) had super 8 and 16mm cameras of his own and this footage - often of completely unsuspecting stars, such as Barbara Bach and Roger Moore - is available in its entirety. The well-known event of Cubby Broccoli cooking for the entire crew on an Egyptian location shoot is there, as is seemingly endless footage of behind-the-scenes location scouting sequences and fascinating detail about the miniatures, shooting issues and management of the films. If you're wondering how this is any different from all the other 'extras' discs in other movies, it's because these were not intended for commercial releases and are thus not smoothly narrated nor edited carefully by the studios. The material was sourced by the Ian Fleming foundation, and the narration - often by Patrick McNee but mostly off-the-cuff by Adam himself and sometime by a female ex-Bond girl - is a revelation, as the old Bond crew members talk freely about their time achieving what they did. It's impossible to overstress the value of these discs. They're utterly unlike any other DVD extras I've ever seen and they afford not only a fascinating glimpse into the unique Bond 'family' at work, but also an intriguing insight into many of the difficulties faced during the various shoots. Absolutely unmissable by the film student or the Bond aficionado.

Good value Ultimate Edition set of Bond Lite adventures
Sean Connery was always going to be a hard act to follow as 007. Even Roger Moore himself admitted to warming up for the role of Bond sounding like Connery, so he knew the scrutiny he'd be under. No heavyweight actor, Moore nevertheless skilfully developed the role of Bond to suit both his style and the mood of the times. From 1973's flares 'n' voodoo debut Live And Let Die, through to 1985's rather tired, silicon valley escapade A View To A Kill, Moore gives it his best shot. Having all 7 films in this Ultimate Edition set for the current price (as of Aug 2016) of just over £15 feels like good value, given the inclusion of generous extras on additional discs for all the films. The warnings from other Amazon reviewers about the stickiness of the cases are useful - on arrival these discs look fine and all play without trouble - but regular checks might be the order of the day. It's a risk worth taking though - digitally remastered, advert-free and play-when-you-like freedom means goodbye to the repeats on ITV. Worth buying for that alone.

A must for Roger Moore bond fans. I remember ...
A must for Roger Moore bond fans. I remember seeing this box set on here not long ago for around£50 pounds, so now at this price its a steal! Its also two disc special editions, so it comes with plentyof special features, also featuring audio commentary's including one from the man himself.

Unmissable
The first few films are more than superlative. But subsequent ones taper off, with the wit being replaced with forced action. But overall, these films define the experience of watching bond movies for me.

Roger Moore collection
The films are brilliant but I had to send my box set back 3 times because a single DVD wouldn't work in my DVD player. It must have been a batch fault because it was always the same DVD. It was very annoying having to check 7 bond films. That said the films are brilliant. Well ok 5 are brilliant while you put up with Moonraker and Octopussy......

Enjoyable
I always thought the Roger Moore films were the best of the Bonds. Many may disagree. Funny how they look far less sophisticated than I remember them when they first came out - but that's to be expected now. They still have that charm and subtle humour. However I'd like to see the other 007's again too, now. Good set to own when you feel the need for a Bond film coming on.
