Helping Your Transgender Teen: A Guide for Parents Paperback – February 10, 2011

This book is not helpful at all. I gave it 2 stars only because of the resources in the back. All this book does is to confirm that you have questions and you are not alone. It tells you to be supportive. It really muddies the gender identity issue with sexual preference. And then suggests you talk to the school and family for transition. It assumes your child really has confided in friends so transition won't be as difficult. Never answers those questions you have. This book assumes you have a typical transgender child who really has always related to the opposite sex. Does nothing to address if they haven't. If you got this far to wanting to read this book, you already know everything that's said. Very disappointed.

While an attempt was made to separate sexual orientation from gender identity, there are places in the text that muddy that separation. Concluding that transgender female teenagers are all sexually attracted to men is absurd. The book, towards the end, contained a lot of "cut and paste" from previously presented portions. A waste of time and money.

Good and bad. It's great for parents who's child has come out to them as transgender recently. It sucks in the sense that it misgenders trans people in examples and reinforces some crappy stereotypes. If you're planning on coming out or your child has just come out, it's super helpful in establishing understanding, but recognize that some parts are not applicable to everyone and should be disregarded.

As a psychologist I was very happy to find this book to recommend to any parent whose child is struggling with gender identity. He does a nice job of explaining concepts like gender expression, non-conformity and gender identity in a way that is very accessible.

Book was suggested by our counselor as a good place to start, and I would completely agree. At first, the book seemed somewhat "vanilla", speaking in broad terms, but, again, it appears to be a good, solid jumping off point for further discussion and research. It also provides helpful resources to assist in the journey. Quick read and easy to understand and relate to.

I bought this for my transgendered teen to educate all of us. She says the book is very accurate in portraying her feelings and also learned a lot. I have shared it with her teachers and the school is working with the information to help her through the process of gender dysphoria. This book has been a great source of information and helping our teenager understand herself.

I work as a therapist with children and families and this book was short enough so that I can pass it along to families and it doesn't seem like too much "work" to read through it. It gets to the point in easy to understand language and brings up many of the key issues that will face a family and their teen who is going through this very difficult situation. It also helps remind us that compassion is needed-not over reaction or a crisis minded attitude. Parents can find they aren't the only ones who may feel a certain way or have a specific worry and this helps when they may be feeling alone and isolated in this kind of situation. I had some teens read it as well and they approved~ great resource!

This short guide was a huge help to me in learning about my transgender teen. The author's approach always keeps the parents'/family's perspective in mind, and with a reassuring and calm voice, he addresses the sometimes scary and/or stressful time when a teen comes out as transgender. He thoughtfully explains what transgender teens go through during transition, carefully laying out everything from self-awareness to changes in public presentation of gender and medical options. He also includes a brief but helpful summary of the legal issues surrounding being transgender. I highly recommend this to parents or families who want to learn more about this issue.

This book is brilliant,,i now know how my child is feeling and why...Recommended.

Excellent easy read,most helpful in working with teenagers. Well packaged and delivery time was accurate. Would recomment for all those adults in contact with Teenagers who are struggling with identity issues.

looks good im 20 but this should help anyways as only just not a teen

This is a great little book, very quick to read and really reassuring. Left me feeling uplifted.
