A good 90's sitcom
I wasn't able to get into The Thin Blue Line when it was first shown on TV, mainly because I really couldn't see Rowan Atkinson in any role other than that of Edmund Blackadder. What probably didn't help was that this show wasn't as funny as Blackadder, nor did it give me the same feeling that I was watching something particularly special or at all ground-breaking.It's a shame I overlooked it back then because it had a great cast, a fresh and witty script and the usual undercurrent of madness that accompanies pretty much all of Ben Elton's sitcoms. There are numerous lines that crop up that still make me roar with laughter, even after having heard them a few dozen times. The cast, for the most part, are well-chosen and produce some at times memorable performances, although David Haig steals the show as the ineffectual DI Grim, closely followed by Mark Addy as his loutish subordinate, DC Boyle. Unfortunately neither of them seem to have been given the screen time they deserved, the show's producers electing to focus attention on other members of the cast, some of whom had the double curse of being both less funny and being given perhaps weaker roles to play. The jokes stand up well even after 12 years, indeed some of them seem funnier with the passage of time. The only real complaints I could level at this show are that said jokes are thinner on the ground that I might have liked and some of the situations the cast are placed in are perhaps a little laboured. Nevertheless, this is a solid sitcom and a great example of 90's TV, probably worth the price for Ben Elton's script alone.

Classic comedy from Ben Elton.
This contains all the episodes of The Thin Blue Line written by Ben Elton, it's quite funny, I always like Rowan Atkinson in his programmes and its good to see Rudolph Walker in a sitcom situation as an inspector. It didn't get much support when it was shown and I doubt that it will be seen again. Very happy with my purchase.

very funny
I belive Rowan Atkinson is funny no matter who he is (Johnny English, Bean etc) Here is is wonderfully cast as Inspector Fowler, head officer at a police station, following the day to day activities of "The thin Blue Line". fowler is aided by his constables and Sargent Dawkins whom he lives with, His avoiding having sex with her is driving her to fustrations, (their troubles alone deserve their own sitcom).James Dreyfus camps it up in style as the dimwited Constable Goodie and is sometimes bettered by the sensible WPC Habib, always trying to put a politcal slant on issues.CID is well represented by DI Grimm played wonderfully by David Haig who when he goes into his "namby pamby" speech is quite brillant.Joining Grimm is his side kick Boyle ( an early role for Mark addy from "Troilled" fame) although he does'nt join the cast until series two! This has aged very well and you could be fooled into thinking this was made yesterday, Ben Elton penned all this and has to take credit for an excellent sitcom. Personnally I would have liked the series to run for longer but someone once said allways leave them wanting more ( Fawlty Towers as a classic example with 12 episodes)VERY VERY FUNNY

This should be in everyone's comedy collection.
Rowan is always at his best in these roles, either Blackadder or Inspector Fowler. He was made for the roles. Delivering lines with such comic value that you laugh everytime, regardless if you know what is coming. The first series wasn't repeated too much on TV, but series two had more coverage. You are spoiled for choice here with both DVDs at a bargain price. Watching them now (2005), they seem fresh and funny as ever, and it's a sin they didn't make a third series. Inspector Grim, played by David Haig, is the icing on the cake, flawless lines and delivery. "It's my arse on the line, and I don't want any cock ups." Watching him get wound up and going into a rant about "my Tina", or some other "Namby Pamby" speech is side splitting, he protrays stress in a hilarous way. This is every bit as good as the best Blackadders in my opinion, it just shows how good sitcom can be. Cast is excellent, the writing brillant. It's rare to find such sitcom perfection.

Light in the covid darkness
Having watched The Thin Blue Line in 1995, and enduring the dearth of decent evening tv since the inception of covid, we yearned for comedy that is REALLY funny, without a swear word every three, and had intelligent comedic twists. Have bought other comedy box sets which have saved our sanity. 'Early Doors', Ever Decreasing Circles', 'It 'ain't Half Hot Mum', 'Rising Damp', 'Only Fools and Horses', the list of old, solid comedy is endless. The Thin Blue Line (penned by Ben Elton) is among these diamonds, its talented cast upholding the protagonist, Rowan Atkinson, with their own facial expressions supporting the very funny lines. Dig back in the past if you want something ALL the family can laugh at together, without embarrassment. Superb.
