It's Bonkers - but this Works!
You are sitting there thinking "This can't possibly work?" Right? Wrong! I know it seems bonkers but, yes, this DOES work. At £4.50, I've tried it with mandolin, octave mandola, tenor banjo and five string banjo. All work. Want to know something even madder? I got it to work on a harmonica, although it's a bit impractical if you like to use your hands round the back of the instrument. Sadly, it doesn't work with a recorder! :-) It comes with no instructions which is initially a bit disconcerting. That's because it doesn't need any. You clip it on the headstock of your instrument, plug the jack into your amp, find optimum voume setting, and away you go. You will find that different instruments need different volume settings. There's no battery. It's completely passive and somehow it works. Some reviewers are saying they get no sound. I can only surmise they either have a faulty unit or have forgotten that the master volume might need adjusting as well as the gain control. Maybe their amps are somehow incompatible - mine's just a £100 practice amp. Ignore comments about the width and length of the lead. What do you expect at this price? Buy a spare!I doubt you will see professional musicians using these and I am sure that the sound quality is nowhere near as good as you would get from an expensive integrated pick-up and on-board electronics. I'm sure it would be useless in the Royal Albert Hall. But for the amateur who, like myself, has occasional need of some amplification then this is a ridiculously cheap and workable solution - and you only need one for any number of string instruments you might have. I am going to sell my disappointing electro-acoustic Ovation mandolin and just use this widget on my Fylde acoustic. Mad, but using a fine instrument with this gadget is better than using a mediocre instrument with on-board electronics.. If I could give it six stars I would. So if you're thinking about it, I suggest you buy it. You stand to lose £4.50 and that's the limit of your risk. It can't damage your instrument or your amp. So just go for it. I'm sure it will bring a puzzled smile to your face as it did mine!

Cheap and cheerful and better than you’d expect
Does just what you’d expect. Small enough to clip onto the soundboard by the sound hole on a soprano uke it picks up reasonably and without any horrible distortion. Plugged into an amp direct and reasonable sound quality. Plugged into an active DI box it connects to PA amp OK.Skinny 3m lead - not sure if it is that well shielded. No major hum or crosstalk but feels a bit on the edge.As well as what you’re playing it picks up EVERYTHING you do. Picking up your instrument, tapping, anything. Lead needs to be secured somehow (I attach to strap) or it taps on the uke body. It is possible to pick up the music with the sensor clipped to the headstock but I found that it picked up the sound of fingering and everything else too loudly to be practical. Cheap and cheerful and probably better than you’d expect

Excellent item, great price, works so well you might reconsider electro acoustics!
Very very impressed. I hook this up through my midi USB PC controller and different DAW programs. Because of this, its plenty loud, ni feedback and there's nothing quite as amusing as distortion on a ukulele or mandriola. Via my amp it was a little quieter and there was feedback issues, but my amp is really really small and bad and nothing sounds that gold on it anyway.I don't feel the need to get an electro-acoustic anything now heh

Versatile sound enhancement.
I needed something quick to lift the sound of a Cello for a Christmas concert. I didn't have much to spend. When I first saw this, I was a little dubious as others I'd seen were way more expensive and required adhesive pads! Not good for the body of a cello.I'm so glad I went for it! The sound reproduction is amazing. And, what's more, it can be just clipped on and off easily, not just stringed instruments, but brass and woodwind instruments too.Amazing 'must have', versatile piece of kit and only £5! Can't go wrong.

I bought this to use with a cello, and ...
I bought this to use with a cello, and I had it plugged it in to a Lindy USB guitar lead and then into the computer. I was barely able to hear any sound coming out so for me it's unusable, but this may be because it just needs a pre-amp (which I don't have). However, I don't know for sure as there is an absence of any technical documentation. So it might work for you - and I wasn't expecting much for the price, to be honest.

Get LOUD!
I bought this to use primarily with my professional tuner (via its jack input)in noisy environs (it is difficult to tune an instrument using the tuners built in mic when there is lots of background noise). However I also bought a Cherub tuner and this has proved good enough to negate the need for the pickup (the Cherub tuner uses vibration rather than sound input)I usually use a mic for my acoustic instruments but I have experimented with this pickup and it is quite good if positioned correctly on the instrument.I first tried it positioned near the bridge of my uke but this resulted in every brush of the sleeve etc being horribly amplified.Next I tried clipping it to the tuner which was already clipped to the headstock reasoning that the rubber clip of the tuner would damp some of the extraneous sounds. This it did though the sound was somewhat dulled. The best result seemed to be just clipping it to the headstock direct. This made the uke sound great through my Peavey amp.Experiment-the results are well worth it.

Fun, cheap, weak. Good for a laugh, not recording or gigs
Bought for a giggle, and for the price it is great fun. there is a hum, as mentioned by other reviewers, and (of course) it picks up slaps/taps of guitar/uke bodies. Tried it on an acoustic bass and found that it just doesn't pick up much. There isn't much gain generally though - you need to boost it if putting it into a mixer with other sources.

Not for Saxophone
I was sceptical that this product would work on brass and woodwind and I was right. It doesn't.However, on the upside it works great on the Banjo and mandolin. Ok for the price
