Chronicle of a British Institution
This book continues the Shire Library tradition of producing well researched, written and illustrated books covering many facets of social history. In this book The British Milkman, Tom Phelps, who was formerly a senior manager at Unigate, vividly recalls the history of both milk delivery and the vehicles associated with it. The book which runs to around 64 pages includes informative text plus many drawing and photographs covering the following eras: The Early Milkman Before 1900: Pushing the Pram 1900-19: Stable Times 1920-39: Electrifying Times 1940-59: The New Order 1960-79: The Modern Milkman 1980 to the Present: and Further Reading and Places to Visit. There is also good index. This Shire book is fascinating, and will for many, bring the memories flooding back. Recommended.

Nice read
Having been a milkman from 1971 and eventually moving on to process management I found Tom's book a fascinating read and it is amply illustrated with many photos............made a great read as did the other book Wartime Milkman.

Nostalgic Milkman
This was given as a present to our friend who was himself a milkman in the early 70's. He was very amused by it.

THE BRITISH MILKMAN (SHIRE LIBRARY)
This is a delightful book so do consider it as a gift for your milkman (if you have one!). I gave mine as a retirement gift to my milkman.

Don't leave this on the doorstep!
The British Milkman is a concise and thoroughly interesting history of a once common, but now fast disappearing, tradition of doorstep delivery. This book is much more than just a catalogue of dates and gives a human insight into the everyday lives of milkmen and their industry.Well worth its very modest price.
