Still Open all Hours - Series 1 & 2

Meh-meh-meh Masterful comedy!
Nearly thirty years on, and Granville has inherited the shop from his uncle. Gone are his daydreaming days of escape and adventure, put partly to rest by a misadventure in Blackpool with a "nice girl. Very friendly. With everyone.", resulting in a box left on his doorstep containing Leroy, his son. Brought up by Granville single-handedly (with perhaps a little help from Now Retired Nurse Gladys and the other local ladies) Leroy is now the young, handsome delivery boy Granville always wanted to be - something Granville seems to take a secret pride in. Granville has taken to heart the training "received from the meh-meh-meh Master" and added his own twist. There is now more than a little Arkwright in him, but Granville is only just below the surface. The humour and style of the writing has not changed at all (not that surprising when it's still the same scriptwriter) and this doesn't sit well with some people who were expecting it to have been more modern. I think it would have been wrong to try and update it. The camaraderie would not be the same with the intrusion of mobile phones, internet, modern argon and so on. It's a wonderful, snuggly, nostalgic steaming mug of hot chocolate of a sitcom with a gentleness not often seen these days.

Even Better than the Original Series
I enjoyed the original series with Ronnie Barker, but I like this new series even more. Aside from the widescreen format and the improved colour, it includes a wider variety of interesting characters whilst maintaining the character and charm of the orginal series. This is accomplished by keeping some of the original characters (played by the original actors) and continuing the same style of humour, but without repeating all the running gags from the original series. I particularly enjoyed the salesman, played brilliantly by Mark Williams (of Father Brown fame), who periodically shows up trying to sell Granville new products to display in the shop. Each time he appears, he's working for a different firm and selling a different product. He never succeeds, but he always ends up leaving the shop with a load of goods that Granville sold to him. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoyed the original series.

Still Open all Hours - Series 1 & 2 [DVD]
An excellent and natural sequel to 'Open All Hours' & equally funny to which the addition of lively vingnette characters gives extra sparkle. As with the best of all Roy Clarke's work, the comedy is inlaid with a touching sensitivity and seriousness. I do hope there will be a series 3 & 4.
