An important and poignant film of those who flew in WW2
I have always loved this film since it was released. Watching it on the big screen was enthralling. The story was so insightful, following the lives of the characters who flew these missions, never knowing if they would ever return.Though stylised to the nines, telling a story that encompasses all the events that could happen on a mission, and filming it in a way that makes you feel like you were there with the use of real B17 bombers, that is what gives this movie its authenticity. Along with very good recreated and authentic period outfits, well researched story arc, a top mixed soundscape design, first class photography and a production design that was pushing the limits of technological capabilities of its day; all that is what makes this is a modern day classic.Having said that, the transfer to Blu-ray does show the dating of the film print. It really needs an injection of funds for an FX update. That would bring the model imigary upto par with the real aircraft footage.Music is brilliant, endearing and evocative to the genre, events, the period and it's people.A magnificent tribute to all those young heros who flew in WW2, keeping us free from tyranny.

A relatively forgotten great film.
Was a young teen when it hit the cinema, I'll be honest it didn't interest me. But, now Im In my 40s and this film has 2 meanings, 1,reminds me of the late 80 early 90s2, the sacrafice young men made in the 1940s.The story although loosely based, it is a good movie.John Lithgo always a great actor and plays a good part. It's up there for me with top war movies. There are real dog fights shown here to which brings home the reality between the glam of the silverscreen. When you see the flying fortresses which were like the Avril Lancaster Bomber it really took guts and skill.Good film.

A boys own adventure....
....or in these times equally a girls own adventure. I bought this DVD after attending the Goodwood revival and seeing the original B17 used in the film (the Sally B). All those beautiful old war-birds and out of work actors strutting about in A2 jackets reminded me of the story of the Memphis Belle. It is a good old fashioned war movie, lots of action and character development (but mostly action!). The original story was apparently based on an RAF Lancaster crew but the B17 was though to open up the American market. But the transition works very well. It's the sort of film I wouldn't mind my children watching, not too much bad language, no gratuitous graphic violence and a (reasonably) happy ending (if you happen to be one of the allies). In WW2 about 1/3 of the allied bomber crews lost their lives and the central section in the movie, when the base-commander ticks off the publicity guy, still catches in my throat, if you've seen it then you know what I mean. Now if only they had used the Lancaster.....

Great Film
I originally bought this film in DVD format, but lost it during a house move. This Blu-Ray copy is excellent, great sharpness of picture and the extras are worth watching as well. It is a great story and you get to feel for the characters as they face death at every bullet shot at them.. I loved the film and have now watched it at least 4 times, and still enjoyed it.. Worth the buy.

Great accompaniment to WWII curriculum!
This is a great film. And, best of all, if you've got boys over the age of say, 7, it's a perfect family film. When my 9yr old son told me they were learning about WWII at school, I instantly ordered this film, as I remembered it as being a great action film indicative of that time. And my memory was right! In my humble opinion this film is a great way to give children a small idea what the WWII air soldiers endured. It's a great way of providing them with more of an insight as to the emotions involved in WWII by presenting them with characters and their emotions, rather than just the facts. My son loved it and was gripped from start to finish. It's a great film, with nothing at all offensive or gory so I consider it to be a perfect family film for anyone with boys over the age of about 7.
