Product Description Mr. Mom (PS/RPKG/DVD)]]> .com When Jack Butler (Michael Keaton) loses his job at an auto factory, he expects to quickly find another. But instead, his wife Caroline (Teri Garr) starts working for an ad agency and Jack ends up taking care of the house and kids. He soon runs afoul of shopping etiquette, a voracious vacuum cleaner, and he can't even drop his kids off at school properly. He starts losing his pride and letting himself go. He stops shaving, drinks at all hours, and watches soap operas. And not only does a predatory divorcée (Ann Jillian) have her eye on him, Caroline's new boss (Martin Mull) has more than business on his mind. Will their marriage survive? What makes Mr. Mom work isn't its role-reversal premise, but its clever off-the-main-plot scenes like the obstacle course at the company picnic, where a footrace with swim fins is set to a variation on the theme to Chariots of Fire; a poker game using discount coupons for money; or a traumatic, soap-opera-influenced dream Jack has when he realizes his life is going down the toilet. This is the first starring role for Michael Keaton, who went on to star in Beetlejuice and Batman; he makes the most of both its comic and sentimental side. The script, incidentally, is written by John Hughes, who later went on to write and direct The Breakfast Club and Home Alone. --Bret Fetzer

Quaint and enjoyable 80's comedy
I always remembered this film as the very first VHS rental we had back when the Movie Rental business started taking off in the 80's. As a result, I always had a soft spot for this film and decided to get it to help preserve it. After watching it again after all these years, it's still enjoyable.Michael Keaton stars as a Husband and Father who was recently furloughed from his job at an Auto Manufacturers plant. While he's searching for a new job, his wife manages to get a nice job with an advertising agency, so now the roles are reversed and the clueless father has to stay home and learn how to manage the household and kids. This comedy definitely couldn't have been made today. Back when it was made, the notion of men having to stay home while the wife worked was still pretty new. What was funny back then probably wouldn't be considered funny or unusual today. What really makes this movie great is Michael Keaton. While we know him today more for action (Batman) and dramatic roles, we tend to forget that he actually started out as a stand-up comedian and then comedic actor. This film was his first Top-Billing film and it's really pretty good. His delivery and comedic timing is really good and I like his interactions with the children. One of the funnier scenes was when he had a dream about an encounter with a neighbor (played by the very beautiful Ann Jillian) and his vengeful wife. His antics were so funny that you can see Ann Jillian trying to contain herself and keep from laughing out loud. Keaton is a talented actor all around, but I'm hoping that someday he can get back to his comedic roots and make more films like this one.The Shout! Factory Blu-Ray presentation is good. They always do a good job with their movies and this is no exception. The only features are a trailer and a retrospective documentary with some of the actors from the film, but they're fine.If you like 80's comedy and are also a fan of Michael Keaton, this is a really good movie to have.

Social satire hits the funny bone.
An 80s social satire, Mr. Mom tickles the funny bone. This comedy holds court for two big Hollywood stars of the time: Terri Garr, known for playing Inga in Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein, and Michael Keaton, who played Batman in the self-titled movie, Tim Burton's Batman. The combination of Garr and Keaton proves to be a good formula for making a snazzy, poignant, bizarre rib-splitting comedy. As far as a movie, Mr. Mom works. Beside the acting, another reason this comedy has all of the trappings of a hit comedy, the writing. Written by John Hughes, who a couple of years after, wrote one of the most popular movies of the 80s: The Breakfast Club. This movie well depicts the era, when women wore shoulder-pad blouses and masculine attires. This movie begins when Jack Butler works as an engineer for an automobile corporation, but him, and his two friends, get downsized, axed from their well-paying jobs. Little money to pay the bills, Jack's wife Caroline opts to use her education and applies for a job in the advertisement field. She lands the job while Jack stays home and babysits the three kids. As it turns out, Caroline is a potent, creative, successful worker. And her husband is doing his best he can staying home with the kids. This movie is not only funny, it also makes a social comment on women in the workforce. It shows women could succeed at work, if they leave the household, and child care tasks to the other half of the marriage. During the 80s, that was a popular social belief, and many women lelt the household to work at high profile, high status, important jobs. Women were entering the well-paying profession workforce. This movie shows that. Yet in a funny way, there's a belly-laugh at every corner. This movie is a sign of the time: 1980s. This movie is both funny, and profound. It really happened, women lelt the household chores. They found those chores boring, unchallenging in the 70s, and for extra money in the household, set out to work in fields once dominated by men. Back then, to take advantage of their education, women entered the white-collar workforce. In my neighborhood, I've seen househusbands walking the kids to bus stops. And wait there for the school buses, sometimes driven by woman bus drivers. Mr. Mom accurately shows that our society was changing. Women began being the breadwinner, and sometimes, the husband, the babysitter.Nevertheless, Mr. Mom brings the change to our culture to a funny point of view. Both Garr and Keaton elicit chuckles. They are hysterical. In the 80s, they were different times. Those, different times, made those who adapted to the change succeed. And those who didn't, fall flat on their faces with failure: very much like Charles Darwin's theories. In Mr. Mom, Caroline and Jack adapt to the change. As a result, they strive and succeed. They survive because they adapt.

When Movies were Fun
The child actors are the best part of the whole movie, which is a rare thing. The neighboring housewives teach Mr. Mom the tricks of their trade while his wife works full time. (This was unusual during the 1980's, though women were starting to work outside of the home more). Enjoy 2 hours of sheer entertainment and good laughs. The 1980's were the best! Highly recommend.

Good fun
Not sure why the nudniks in Hollywood can't make movies like this anymore. No exploding cars. No humans turning into ants or spiders into humans. No gritty language that would make grandma's head explode (believe it or not, we don't all use F-bombs in our everyday speech).Mr. Mom is simple without being simplistic, witty without being snooty, and predictable without being safe. The kids aren't annoying (amazingly), especially when having to get rid of a favorite blanket ("I think I need a moment to myself"). Terri Garr is in her wheelhouse here, she's lovable, smart and has impeccable timing. There are lots of great smaller roles which I always appreciate and to me always enrich a movie. Michael Keaton obviously had a blast in this role, you can just tell. He both underplays and overplays his Mr. Mom character and I couldn't imagine anyone else having played it!If you don't enjoy this movie just a little bit, you are dead inside. It won't win any awards from those upper-crusters, but boy is it fun!

The movie with heart! Nostalgic 80’s at its best
If you’re a Michael Keaton fan, this movie is a must watch & own! A hidden gem & underrated. Get ready for the laughs, music from the 80’s and a very nostalgic score. Teri Garr gives an outstanding performance too.

Classic Comedy !!!!!
A nostalgic purchase. I can remember wtaching this film on TV one Christmas back in the 80's and rolling around on the floor in hesterics.Wasn't sure if I'd still find it funny after all these years, but It's stood the test of time well and I laughed my socks off. Must be one of the funniest films of the 80's.

Lustig
