Accurate Enough for Most Body & Household Temperature Measurements
The Canbeisi Digital Thermometer is a badged version of the EFT-161 thermometer, a popular model which is sold under many brand names in Amazon and around the world. It claims to accurately measure body temperature using the ear or forehead. It also claims to measure environmental (room) temperature and the temperature of objects around your home in the range 0 - 100 degrees Celsius. With the blue probe cover in place, it only measures forehead temperature, and an icon of a face is shown in the display. In this mode, the temperature values displayed are in the range 32 - 42.9ºC (89.6 - 109.2 F). Anything measured outside that range shows 'Lo' or 'Hi'. When taking the forehead temperature, the instruction manual suggests you keep the 'Start' button pressed down for a few seconds while swiping from one side of the forehead to the other. When you do this, you will hear a ticking sound as you swipe, and the resultant temperature will be displayed when you release the button. The device appears to be continuously recording the skin temperature as you swipe, but the temperature displayed is the maximum reached during that swipe along the skin. With the blue probe cover removed, the thermometer displays both the icon of an ear and a house. That means you can measure ear canal temperature and object temperatures around the home, including room environmental temperature. In this mode, the theoretical range of temperatures it can display is 0 - 100 deg Celsius. Outside this range, 'Lo' and 'Hi' are still displayed. Is it accurate? I would say that it is as definitely accurate for body measurements - probably accurate to within 0.1 - 0.2ºC in repeated tests. Object measurement (outside the body range of 32 - 42C) is probably accurate to within 1 C, but only when measuring temperatures under 60 C. Once you get into measuring hot liquids such as cups of tea, or just boiled water and it seems that the thermometer is significantly more variable in its accuracy, and more dependent on measuring technique. In my testing, I went backward and forward measuring the temperature of a number of different objects at different temperatures (in the range 4 - 60 Celsius), and the results usually showed repeatability - Ie. the same object had the same temperature when measured a number of times.A little theory now... The technology in this device used to measure temperature is an 'infrared sensor'. Your eye appreciates the colour of an object by measuring of the frequency of light bouncing from it into your eye. Infrared radiation is in the same spectrum of light as colour, but just at a much lower energy and frequency. The thermometer is measuring the frequency of the infrared light which hits its sensor. Hotter objects emit a higher frequency of infrared radiation, and that is picked up by the sensor. The above seems simple, but actually different objects emit the infrared radiation in markedly different ways, and this is categorised by its 'emissivity' value (between 0 & 1). The temperature calculation has to take into account the emissivity value or it won't be correct. Emissivity values vary markedly, based on the material in question, its colour, its polish and even invisible coatings which are sometimes applied to objects. Metals have very low emissivity, so expect *wildly inaccurate* values when pointing the thermometer at metal. My aluminium kettle measured 44C when it was just boiled, but aluminium has very low emissivity of 0.1, so this is not unexpected. The EFT-161 thermometer doesn't specify the emissivity value it uses, but most such thermometers have a fixed emissivity value of 0.9. That means it will accurately measure wood, plastic, paper, textiles and obviously skin, but it will be significantly less accurate when measuring objects with lower emissivity values. The thermometer is designed to measure the temperature approximately 0.5 to 1 cm in front of the sensor. At this distance, there is very little which might 'contaminate' your reading. You do have to be careful when measuring 'room temperature', that you are pointing at a 'thermally neutral object' in your room. A heater on the other side of your room, is still emitting infrared radiation, and if you point the thermometer at it, even though it is 3 metres away, it will still contaminate and raise the measured reading. My thermometer measured 22C when pointing at the carpet, 18C when pointing at the window, and 34C when pointing at the radiator, even though all those objects were greater than 1 metre away from the thermometer.Notes On Use -- The memory button cycles through the last 20 temperatures taken.- When measuring body temperature, I suggest you do 3 readings, and take the average of the three.- Units C/F : When off, if you press the Mem button for 5 seconds, it will allow you to change the units from Celsius to Fahrenheit.- Object Mode : When off, if you press the Mem button for 10 seconds, it will change the mode to 'object mode' only - although it is not clear how this is different to the standard ear / object mode you get with the blue probe cover removed.Measuring Ear Temperature -When measuring ear temperature, you are aiming to get the temperature of the ear drum (tympanic membrane), as that is the same as the body's core temperature. It is not generally appreciated that the ear canal is in the shape of a 'Z'. If you point the thermometer into the canal without pulling the ear (pinna) backwards, you will be measuring the skin of the ear canal and not the ear drum - so the reading will be lower than expected. In adults, the ear is pulled upwards and backwards. In babies, the ear is pulled directly backwards. In this way, the temperature probe is aimed at the ear drum, and you will get consistent readings. In babies less than 3 months of age, the ear canal may be too small to get a correct reading.Things the Thermometer Doesn't Do -- There is no orange / amber colour warning when the temperature is between 37.4 - 37.9C. It is green all the way up to 37.9C, and red with a beeping warning 38.0C and above. The photos on Amazon which show an amber colour warning are confusing and incorrect !!- You cannot silence the beep. If your baby doesn't like the beep during measurement, there's nothing you can do about this.- You cannot program the temperature at which the alarm beeps. Amazon description says this, but it is not true !!- All the photos on the Amazon description show the Canbeisi logo on the front of the device. My device has no such logo.Other things to note -- It claims to do 3000 temperature measurements on a set of 2 AAA batteries.- Thermometer is only guaranteed to work for 5 years. After that they say that the accuracy of the sensor cannot be guaranteed.- I tried measuring the temperature of steam from a kettle, and not only did it have an unusual variability in its temperature readings, it also seemed to generate very inaccurate temperature measurements for the next couple of minutes. The sensor apparently doesn't like to be wet or humid. In fact the specifications note it should only be used in humidity < 80%, so these inaccuracies are not unexpected. Conclusion -A good thermometer, fit for the purpose, and at a reasonable price.

This item is dangerous
I have been using this for 5 months , my baby temperature has been normal but he has been hot to touch when I thought he wansnt well , at the weekend I had to get my child seen urgently by a doctor , I said that I’ve been checking his temperature for 6 days and it has been fine , this item has been giving me false reading instead of being 36.4 he was 38.9 , this is a sign of infection and that he needed to be seen days ago! Please don’t take the risk buyingThis item.

This is a really nice thermometer, easy to use and accurate
This is a really nice thermometer, easy to use and accurate. It provides highly accurate readings and the colour change feature is particularly helpful when it's night time. Great for the whole family. The ability to take the room temperature or the surface temperature of an item, is just an additional plus.

Batteries not Included
Arrived within a day of ordering, albeit at the end of the following day, but the most disappointing aspect was not finding the required AAA batteries included. I didn't notice the 'Batteries not Included' on the sales page but no bother, once installed the machine appears to work as per design. But I have no separate device against which to measure the accuracy of the readings given. Still breathing though, so not all bad news!!
