Awesome!
This is ever so slightly small for my hands but I've quickly got used to it. People complain about a lack of touchscreen and the out-dated Sony interface - honestly? I would consider that to be really picky. The only reason I can see for a touchscreen is the ease of use to select a focus area but even that doesn't hold me back as the camera automatically seems to know where I want to place the focus. The menu system works well and is easy to navigate and select options. The camera is very light and easily slips into my pocket and it is PACKED full of great features. 4K video, 24 fps continous shooting, the quickest autofocus lock-on I've ever experienced and great quality images. It does panoramas, slow-motion video and I'm totally delighted with it. I will now retire my Canon Powershot G12 after many years of great service but it is showing it's age against this little wonder! Okay, it's pricey for a compact camera but it IS top of the range - there is no better compact on the market at the moment. The electronic viewfinder is stuffed with information and it's great to have the diopter adjustment so I don't need my glasses to frame a shot when looking through the viewfinder. The zoom is shorter than the Powershot's zoom so I'll be using a manual zoom to get closer - it's called walking closer to the subject :-) The manual which comes with it is enough to get you up and running in no time at all and the full manual can be had online if you need it. The focus ring around the lens is easy to use and I prefer to zoom with it rather than the stepped zoom around the shutter button. This is a great camera which I'm really happy with and highly recommend.

A fantastic compact camera
I love this high quality compact camera. I've taken a couple thousand pictures with it and I love the image quality, fast lens, and sensible controls. Compared with my old DSCRX100M2 (which did not have a viewfinder), the digital viewfinder makes the M5 much more useful on sunny days or whenever you want to follow the action with your eyes. Compared with my DSLR's optical viewfinder, however, it does not feel as direct (eg, it has some lag and jitter when panning) - but it is wonderful to have it on such a pocketable camera. It's pricey, but I recommend it highly!

the camera itself is fine and the quality of both stills & video is ...
My first Sony camera experience and have to say that the 'jury's out.' Yes, the camera itself is fine and the quality of both stills & video is very much as I expected - top notch. Coming from Canon the menu system is by no means straightforward and the camera could certainly do with a touchscreen monitor. But the real problem is that Sony support is absolutely hopeless - I've been trying for the last week to get access to the Play Memories site to download the time-lapse application. Can you believe that Sony, one of the world's largest electronic corporations, doesn't support Safari???? To be told that this is an on-going maintenance issue comes as small comfort. What's more having spent near enough £1k on a camera it doesn't seem unreasonable that it should be capable of shooting time-lapse without Sony charging yet more. Ho hum.....

Top Quality Point and Shoot
Fantastic little camera, I just pop it in my pocket and off I go. It's so small I are it everywhere with me. Great zoom lens equivalent to a 28 to 70mm f1.8 to 2.8. Great video, 4 K if you want it, super slow motion plus 24 frames per second for 150 frames! A lot of camera for a lot of money. If you don't need all of this, try the Mark 3 or 4. I already had the Mark 3 but my wife has pounced on it, claiming it as hers now.

Very fast, good photos but some niggles.
This is really nice little camera and takes some very good, detailed pictures. The auto focus is really fast, rivalling that of dslr cameras and is a really useful feature. We have a dog that doesn't like to pose and our previous compact couldn't focus fast enough to allow us to take the picture. This camera really isn't cheap, but you're paying for the speed.I also like the way the screen folds out, especially when taking low pictures. It allows you to get that photo without having to really bend down, which can be a useful feature.picture quality is, as you'd expect at this price, very good and photos seem vibrant and well detailed with good colour levels. I am not a professional photographer but am really pleased with the results this gives.there are however a couple of negatives which is a shame at this price. The zoom is relatively small. For many, this won't be an issue, and it probably helps in keeping pictures so sharp and I suspect for the target audience of this camera many will be happy with the zoom range. For me the larger issue is the space with which to hold the camera. I found it difficult to know where to put my fingers, and when trying to take photos, it seems more natural to try pressing the mode dial rather than the shutter release button. I'm sure when using it a lot, this will become second nature, but on first impressions, this is where my fingers naturally fall. My wife has the same issue, so it doesn't seem to apply solely to me.The camera has a ring around the lens which can change various functions such as zoom etc depending on the mode. Again, this doesn't seem to fall naturally to hand and does seem to de stabilise the camera a little in use. It certainly isn't as easy as using the zoom or manual focus ring on an slr.One final feature of the camera is the pop up viewfinder. This for some may be helpful, although personally I am not a big fan of using such electronic viewfinders and find the main screen much easier. When you do use it, putting it back into the camera body automatically switches the camera off, whereas you don't always want to power off, and thus have to switch it back on again. Just a small point but sometimes frustrating. For the price, it would have been nice to get a case. We use an Osprey one which is excellent. We did try a crumpled but despite measuring the camera, it didn't fit.Overall though, a very good camera, although worth trying it for size before purchase.
