I was an ardent Queen fan and found this CD enjoyable. Even my young nephews have enjoyed this recording

BEING OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE FOLLOWED QUEEN SINCE THE EARLY DAYS (I BOUGHT THEIR FIRST ALBUM WHEN IT IT WAS RELEASED & FIRST SAW THEM LIVE AT BINGLEY HALL IN 78), I HAVE BEEN BOTH A FAN & COLLECTOR EVER SINCE. BUT WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT THEY WERE RELEASING AN 'ABSOLUTE' ALBUM I MUST ADMIT I HAD MY DOUBTS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE PERFECT GREATEST HITS ALBUM WOULD BE A SIMPLE COMBINATION OF BOTH THEIR 'GH1 & GH2'. NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD! BUT WHAT WAS PRODUCED WAS I'M AFRAID RATHER A BIT POO! I INTENDED TO GIVE THIS ONE A MISS AS SO MANY HITS WERE JUST NOT INCLUDED. BUT I WAS EVENTUALLY PERSUADED BY THE IMPRESSIVE 'CASE BOUND' BOOK VERSION. AS A BOOK THIS IS A MIGHTY FINE PIECE WITH PLENTY OF NEW PHOTOS AND NOTES ALTHOUGH THE 'CASE BOUND' BIT JUST REMINDED ME OF A KID'S ANNUAL. FROM A CD POINT OF VIEW IF YOU CAN EVEN GET THE DISCS OUT OF THE TIGHT FITTING STORAGE - YOU'D BE BETTER GOING WITH MY ORIGINAL IDEA - JUST GET YOURSELF QUEEN'S GREATEST 1 & 2 OR THE PLATINUM THREE DISC GREATEST - NOW THAT WAS 'THE' ABSOLUTE!!

OK, so I already have all these songs a dozen times over on other CDs. However, being a Queen completist I HAD to have this new compilation! And let's face it, the best way to have it is in the best possible packaging. I'm sure I don't need to tell you about the music, so let's talk about the book. The book itself looks like one of those annuals you used to get in your Christmas stocking as a kid. The first disc (the music) is slipped into the front cover. The second disc (the audio commentary) is slipped into the back. The pages themselves feature lavish colour photos (some very rarely seen) and the printed lyrics to each song. We also have scans of some original hand-written lyrics. However, one pleasant surprise is that when you stick the second disc into your computer, you can access loads of video footage of rare Queen performances from all over the world, taken from each era of their career. If you have a Queen fan in your family, this would make one awesome present.

Not much to say about the songs, we all know them. Some may be happier than others about the choices. I seem to remember Brian May saying they based the choices on sales, which is as far a measure as any, imo.I'm writing this review to commend the mastering job. Instead of taking the tracks from the previous Great Hits albums, they appear to have been mastered specifically for this compilation. One benefit is that the old tracks are not quiet and the new ones very loud, which often seems to happen.Another, more important benefit to this writer is that, they've resisted the temptation to remaster all of the tracks as loudly as possible, depriving the songs of their dynamics and making them fatiguing to listen to. They appear to have been carefully mastered, probably from the original tapes, at very conservative levels, relative to today's norm. This is encouraging for a hits compilation but then, Queen always cared about such things.Disc 2 is quite interesting but doesn't give an awful lot more away than the commentaries on the video DVDs.

You just can't go wrong with Queen.

rien n'a vieillit du travail splendide de ce groupe mirifique ! on ne se lasse pas de leurs chefs d'œuvres gravés éternellement dans nos mémoires...envolées lyriques...chants de beautés intensives...dans toutes les occasions possibles....une chanson de ce groupe phare glorifiait également les sportifs des stades du monde entier...." nous sommes les champions"...on ne pourra jamais l' oublier....
