Excellent pocket guide from the authors of "The Australian Bird Guide"
I am a US birder who has spent a couple months in Australia for self-guided birding (mainly in Sydney, Queensland, and Western Australia). I am a huge fan of “The Australian Bird Guide” by the same authors, so once I heard about the pocket guide version, I pre-ordered a copy from Princeton University Press. It did not disappoint! It is a well laid out pocket version of “The Australian Bird Guide” (ABG). It uses the same ordering as the ABG, starting with marine and coastal birds, then freshwater birds, and finally land birds, which makes a lot of sense for the wide variety of species found in Australia.A typical page covers 3 species, and the information about a particular species is all together: illustrations, range map, brief description (including voice), and the “likeliness of encounter score.” (In ABG, the illustrations are on the right-hand pages with text on left-hand pages.) The font is a bit small like ABG, but easier to read being a sans serif font.It does cover fewer species than ABG, omitting the occasional visitors and vagrants and species found only in Australia’s external territories. As you can see from the photo, it’s significantly smaller than ABG, and it weighs less than 1/3 of ABG.
