Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season One [DVD]

Boldly going
A four disc dvd box set. Containing all ten episodes of new Star Trek show 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'.This is a prequel to original Star Trek. And it also spins out of Star Trek Discovery season two, picking up on where we last see Captain Pike and some others in that. Thus foreknowledge will help a bit with this. Especially in regards to a major plot point about Captain Pike. Although it might work as a jumping on point anyway. If there's anyone out there who doesn't watch every Star Trek show regardless, of course. Each episode runs fifty mins [approx] with the exception of the season finale. Which is sixty two.Pike takes command of the Enterprise. And along with a whole supporting cast of characters, the ship goes out there and explores strange new worlds and new civilisations. Boldly going where no one has gone before. That's what Star Trek shows really should be to make them work.Fortunately - and I say this as someone who has been watching Star Trek since the 70's, so I know it well - this one does.We have: a solid ensemble cast. Every character has a decent depth to them. Every character gets a fair share of the action and storylines across the course of the season. We have episodes that are pretty much stand alone. No one long story for this show. It's tv as it used to be. Although it doesn't fall into the trap of certain previous shows in forgetting what happened in an episode quickly. Because although as mentioned they're stand alone, events and things do linger. Will get mentioned. And will have a lasting effect on characters. Which is as it should be.Music: is great. It's original at times and will draw cues from the original show at others. Which will stir the emotion. Which is what you need to feel the boldly going.Aliens: great make up and design. They do look alien. A far cry from the days of two with bumpy foreheads in Voyager.Moral dilemmas; the heart of some episodes. Which make you think. As it should be. Ones like this are always the best episodes.Continuity: you want Star Trek continuity? You got it. It knows it's stuff. It fits into things. It draws on it when required. Making some upgrades on the original work really well. This goes for some characters as well. Some will be familiar. But they get more depth and action than in the original.Diversity: always a part of Star Trek. Long before the word woke originated. Nobody whose hackles are raised by the latter will need to get annoyed with anything here. It's all well written and subtle. As it should be.Jeopardy: excellent at times. Makes for gripping stuff. And the Captain: Anson Mount is superb in the lead. Making Pike a calm but subtly authorative leader. The kind of Captain you'd want to follow. It is a fifteen certificate. That's down to some of the jeopardy moments. So not for the younger ones. I would say the general level of writing might be too much for them also. The season finale does end on a cliffhanger. Which season two will pick up on. I can't wait to see it.At the time of writing I've not gotten around to Discovery season four. I went through this as quickly as I could. It goes to show what works. There are trailers at the beginning of disc one, but you can skip these via the next button on the dvd remote. Some episodes do have strobe lighting effects. Not too much of this, but be aware if these are not something you can handle.Languages and subtitles:Languages: English, French.Subtitles: English, French. [Described as French - Parisian. Never seen that on a subtitle list before].Extras:Episode one has a commentary from actor Anson Mount and writer Akiva Goldsman.Episodes two three six eight and nine have deleted scenes. All accessed right below the episode on the menu. Two has just one. Which is short and not essential. Three has three. Which are good.Six has two. The first one fills in a gap. It is unfinished at points though.Eight has one. Also short.Nine has six. Some of these are extended versions of what was in the episode. Some of these are really good, as they also fill in gaps. I would watch all of these ones especially. On the final disc:An episode of the original Star Trek. I won't say which because it's a slight spoiler. Reasons.Pike's peek. Twenty mins of video diaries from Anson Mount on working on the show. These have their moments.World building. Ten mins on how certain visuals are done. Somewhat interesting at points because it's fascinating to see how the world has moved on a bit from greenscreeen.Exploring Strange New worlds. A fifty five min overview of the whole season with people talking about what happens. Interesting at points but a bit of a haul in one go.Gag reel. Four mins of outtakes. Some are really good. This feels a bit short though to stick in the mind.

New addition s Is An Lan NOONIAN SINGH chief of security, but more importantly Khan from earth of Khan is a distant descendentNumber one, is Una the first officer who has a dark secretSamuel Kirk ,who many of us know is Kirks older brotherROBERT APRIL makes a couple of appearences. For those who don't know is that when Roddenberry first drafted the series the captain was to be ROBERT APRIL And the ship YORKTOWN, ROBERT APRIL did make an appearance in the animated seriesIncluded as enemy is the gorn, first mentioned in original series 'Arena' where Kirk never seem to know about them but in this they can get away with because people know if them as rumours because as stated by the chief of security who has dealt with them she says people don't survive to talk about them as she's a survivor from them The gorn capture lifeforms and basically kill them eat them or use them breeding sacks, think of the film Alien and u get the picture,I have a space pirate who is the wife of spocks brother , who is not seen but explainedT,pring Spock future intended spouse is in several episodesOne of the best is a remake of balance of terrorA extra is in fact that episode from the original series 'balance of terrorThe 2nd season trailer is on you tubeJames t Kirk is to join the ship ((which means the auto biography book James t Kirk is out of date)I note that Christine Chappell noted by mbenga that She is a civilian exchange has commander rings on her sleeveIn the last episode Ortegas the helmsperson has switched to navigator ,in a nod to styles the bigot in a balance of terror and her role in the remake episode awfully hair cut she has as wellThe 4k upgrade is fantastic if the blue ray is good then this 4k wow this great

It's like going home
Season one on dvd at last, after the long wait made more protracted by the covid crisis, we have the first star trek series that covers the pre Kirk years. some would say this is milking it, but I disagree. Captain Pike's era has been covered in book form and this should be regarded as canon. The stories are good ones on the whole filling in a lot of gaps from the original series. For those of you just joining, the original series was made on a shoestring budget and had to be completed in one week. These days things are done over a reasonable length of time and said budget is much bigger. All the characters are a nice fit, the Enterprise looks rather flashy but familiar, bare in mind she has been refitted at least 5 times in her lifespan, any Aliens in this are already established from Archer's time in NX01. My reaction to this program is one of a certain comfort, it feels like an old armchair you've had for years. My wife and I met through trek in 1984, we binge watched the lot over the weekend, plus extras. can't make them fast enough.

excelente serie

Great addition to the franchise.
We greatly enjoyed the first season of this series. The crew is great. The story line is fun. The special effects are convincing. I hope that by some sort of Star Trek “ magic” that chief engineer Hemmer returns. We have already pre-ordered season two.
