Amazing re-invention of a complex theory into fun and practical application
Dr. Wilson's ability to turn learning into fun never ceases to amaze me! I have been working as a pediatric occupational therapist for over 28 years and have followed Dr. Wilson's work since 2006. She is able to bridge the gap between complex medical and neuro based applications and relate them to practical strategies for the educational setting. I love how she incorporates movement in fun yet strategic ways. She presents cutting edge research on understanding the nervous system both for students and educators. Teachers and educational professionals who feel burned out and overwhelmed need to read this book! I am left with hopefulness and excitement to share the ideas and strategies presented with my co-workers and students who I work with!

Timely and So Important
As a school-based Occupational Therapist, I see so much effort being put into the best reading and math curriculums. These are obviously important, but so many children are not available to learn because they have experienced trauma or stress in their young lives. I see teachers and school staff that care so deeply, but they are also stressed by attempting to meet the needs of their struggling students. I love how this book puts things into perspective. Start with yourself and share your regulation. It’s the connection that makes the difference and opens up our hearts and our brains. If the people who are trying to reach these children are stressed and dysregulated, they lack the ability to completely connect and calm their students. It becomes such a difficult cycle. Learning CAN be joyful and SHOULD be joyful. This book is crucial for anyone who works with children and needs tools to help their students feel safe and connected.

A Necessary and Beneficial Guide for Educators
Have you heard of the polyvagal theory? Did you think it was relevant to education systems? Debra Em Wilson simplifies the polyvagal framework in an informative, and practical manner to guide those who work in school environments. The relatable and real life examples advance reader’s knowledge of the scientific and medical concepts that underly the polyvagal theory and its’ necessity for learning and building relationships inside and outside the classroom. This makes it easy to understand and to apply the concepts with students of any age. The reflective activities at the end of the chapters also assist in improving one’s own responses to daily challenges and situations, which in turn can advance how an individual interacts and connects with students. This book is a must have for anyone who is desiring additional, current, and evidence-based information to strengthen their professional (and personal) development and service delivery.
