Oscar winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) directs the action adventure In the Heart of the Sea, based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex. In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

A Whale of a Time
The premise of this story has Ben Wishaw researching a whaling story for a book he’s thinking of writing and interviews the last surviving member of a whaling ship that was attacked by a whale. Showing in flashback and starting Chris Hemsworth (‘Thor’), it is a rip roaring adventure that also highlights the cruelty involved in whaling. A slow burner to start but soon heats up.

Dive,Dive.
It's not a bad film to watch, but some scenes at sea seemed to be studio shots more than CGI. I would guess not much money was put in to this film. It's not a film I would watch again, Moby Dick with Gregory Peck was much better.

Monster whales- Nah! But it's true I tell you!
I watched this DVD thinking it was a bit far fetched, but after researching the movie, and the story of the 'Essex' , I am of the opinion that it is all true, and such a fantastic tale, reminiscent of the voyage of Captain Blair when cast adrift from 'The Bounty'. It also came to my attention that at least six vessels have been sunk by 'monster' whales! ( I thank 'Wikipedia' for the information!).

Powerful
Ron Howard gave us Rush starring Chris Hemsworth ,which I loved and he has done it again with The Heart oF the Sea.What a fantastic film, all my family enjoyed it .It gives real understanding for the plight of the great Whales, yet also the bravery and determination of the men who hunted them for a living.A tale of courage and survival against the odds, with a deadly escort who makes sure they wont hurt his family anymore.

Now, that's a film.
Film making has come a long way since Moby Dick. Beautiful to look at, and puts you right in the action. I haven't dried out yet.

In the Heart of the Sea
This DVD does not play in Canada or the US, and Amazon left that out of the description. I ordered another and watched it, returning this one. Ron Howard makes great moves, but I prefer Moby Dick with Gregory Peck over this movie.
