Fiske WordPower

The earlier chapters of Fiske, I really enjoyed. All of the chapters are split up and pertain to a category. But as you progress through the book, instead of introducing a variety of words, it just opts to give you synonyms and antonyms, which is kind of a bad idea for a vocabulary book, since words in other vocabulary building books will provide a list of them adjunct following the word. Though, there are mini-quizzes at the end of 3 chapters (3 10 set chapters). And there is a little read about parts of speech that is pretty helpful. For example, there is one about when to use lie, lay, lied, lying correctly. For under 10 dollars, it's not an awful buy, and i'd recommend getting it for an easy intro into "building your word power."

Our son was required to have this book for school. He said it was very helpful during his courses and decided to keep the book when the class was over. Given the state of the book after a year of use (very well worn), I'd have to say it was well worth it.

This book is recommended by my son's English teacher. It groups vocabularies by category. My son thinks it is helpful in increasing his vocabularies.

Love this book. Always wanted to learn more about the English Language and the meaning of words. My goal is to improve my communication skills. This book looks like it will provide me with everything I need.
