No trees are felled to produce this sustainable material; the cork is harvested from healthy, living cork oaks.Cork forests form areas of extreme biodiversity, on a par with Borneo and Amazonia. Acting as watersheds, the trees protect warm, dry landscapes against soil erosion and desertification. The cork oaks provide naturally fire-retardant habitats for many plants and animals, including the critically endangered Iberian lynx. The harvesting of cork prompts the trees to regenerate bark, during which time they absorb approximately five times more carbon dioxide than usual.
