Ice Bear Waterstone Sharpening Kit

Great Japanese quality product but missing the crucial Intermediate Stone
Great product as advertised and used by the great Ray Mears - but the grit gap between the stones is illogical.Having one stone at 800 grit and then the second at 6000 makes absolutely no sense without including an intermediate stone at 1200-1500 grit. Can't fault the product it's self as both waterstones and the holder are excellent Japanese quality, however I'm deducting one star due to the inconveinence of having to separately purchase the 1200 Ice Bear Intermediate stone else where (£5 cheaper than Amazon btw!).Bottom line is that you need the intermediate stone in order to do the job properly and for that, the suppliers need to re-think the package.

pleased with this does as stated
pleased with this does as stated, purchased a 1200 grit stone for 27 quid to use in conjunction with this kit and maybe thats why im pleased as together all three stones allow for a sharp blade but i was stropping my blades after as well. So if you can be bothered to do it slowly i would recommend this to others

Works well - if you know how to use it
You really need a honing guide if you havent done this before, or if you have and you are a bit pedantic. The course stone provided is more intermediate than really fast cutting - and thats a good thing - if you are used to oil stones from the big box stores. It takes a while, but with these stones, and a bit of green wax and some leather (I use pieces from an old suede boot), you can get a chisel so sharp it will shave your arm with a single pass. For a hone guide I recommend the one from Veritas. I never spent so much on a tool for a tool - but its actually a bargain and really easy to use (for blades like chisels and plane blades) - provided they are long enough.

Awsome!!!
Absolutely awsome!!! The kit is absolutely the best sharpening tools I have ever had. This kits contains a nagura stone which you can work up a slurry to clean your knife and polish it up, as well as use it to clean your other stones. It also has a rubber clamp which you can use on a flat surface and it doesn't move around while sharpening...and if it does, you are using too much pressure. My knifes have never been sharpened so good. These stones are also the real deal, Japaneese Whetstones...I haven't seen any better than that. I have diamond sharpening stones that do not compare to the reult I get off these stones. I would recommend that you buy a medium stone as well, but the two stones are good enough. I am eally pleased with my purchase.

Gives a good, sharp edge
Good basic set of stones. I've used them to sharpen up some chisels and plane irons for woodworking, and with some care and practice managed to get a very sharp edge (I think the secret is keeping the same angle on each stroke, so a sharpening guide/jig helps). No doubt an expert would want another stone with a slightly higher grit, so as to put that little extra edge on, but for the average guy these are probably all you need.

Does what it says...
I got this kit along with the 1200 grit stone and I have spent a few weeks sharpening hunting & kitchen knives. I use Wusthoff kitchen knives and they have never been as sharp since using these stones, although I did spend some time practicing on cheaper knives, and I would suggest this as it is not as easy as it looks on various YouTube vids.My hunting knife ... I can actually shave with it now, although it is not something I would recommend!!!

Excellent
All my knives are now very sharp. It takes some time and effort to use correctly, but definitely an excellent product. Watch your fingers afterwards!
