Wonderful headphones, ‘caveat emptor’ and all that
These headphones are not for everybody, but are perfect for my uses.First off, the sound. What you’ll get with these balanced, neutral headphones is clarity. As a listener of all kinds of metal and rock, the separation of instruments is a revelation. Most portable headphones emphasise the bass and overshadow the mids. These cans really let them shine, perfect for the frequencies of electric guitar. There’s no roll off in the treble either, so percussion lovers will love the smashing high hats and cymbals. You’ll have gathered by now then that the MDR7s are probably not ideal for dance music or those that want a thumping bass. While perfectly serviceable to my ears, they’re a less exciting listen for these genres compared to my Momentum’s and other popular headphones. With so few MSR7s available to audition, it’s important people understand what sound they’ll be getting to avoid disappointment. These headphones are equally adept at home or mobile. No amp necessary to drive them, they sound great through a phone. I’ve also compared lossless files with compressed, and streamed over Spotify and Amazon. The sound holds up better than you might expect given the precision of these headphones..With these being the noise cancelling variant I was apprehensive how much the sound profile would change with cancelling off. I’m delighted to say that aside from a slight reduction in volume, you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. You can happily use these with a flat battery (and you’ll get around 35 hours) safe in the knowledge you’re getting a faithful sound. You can’t say that about other noise-cancelling cans that employ lots of processing to filter out the noise. The by-product of this is that the noise cancelling isn’t very powerful. It works best at removing lower frequencies, with a minimal reduction higher up. It’s light years away from the Sony XM3s I demoed recently (so effective I couldn’t even hear my own voice) but enough to dull the rattle of the tube train so that raising the volume (and potentially damage your hearing) isn’t necessary. Personally I find the uber cancelling efficiency of the XM3s or QC25/35 potentially hazardous in an urban environment, so for me the MSR7NC’s strike the right balance. My only criticism is that the noise cancelling amplifies the wind. I’ve had to turn it off several times in what were only moderately breezy conditions.Comfort: fine. I have average sized ears and they fit with room to spare. The headband exerts some pressure on the top of your head, but has never become uncomfortable even after a couple of hours. Your mileage may vary though. That these headphones will creak, however, is inevitable. I’ve sampled an older pair of MSR7s and as well as having peeling p-leather on the earcups they were noisy around the hinges. I’m fully expecting mine to go the same way over time. Otherwise these headphones are supposed to withstand a fair amount of abuse. No headband snapping or other significant faults I’ve read about, and these headphones have been around a while.Comes bundled with two 1.2m 3.5mm cables (one with inline remote) a USB charge cable, carry bag and aeroplane adapter. Box doesn’t come sealed, this is normal apparently and doesn’t indicate a return!Very happy overall, just be aware that what I value in my headphones may not be the same as you. Ostensibly, these are bass-light, creaky headphones with poor noise cancelling and a legacy (wired) connection! I will of course update this review should any glaring issues come to light.Edit: Photo added showing wear after 4 years daily use. Still sound as great as ever, but as expected the pleather has almost entirely peeled off the cups and headband.

Excellent for indoor use, alright for flights
I've now had these for over 2 months. The sound quality is excellent, definitely one of the best I've ever heard. I disagree that they are not for electronic music, you get really clear sound positioning. Using these I've heard things in songs/tracks that I had never noticed before. Of course, I don't care for bass as it overpowers elements, and I hold a belief bass is meant to be felt physically - something not possible with headphones - therefore it's pointless to have bass booster etc. Build quality is awesome, they feel great! The main drawback is the noise cancellation. The battery lasts forever but if you're outside walking you just can't have the cancellation turned on. Wind produces very loud hissing noises. I tried wearing a hood but any contact with the headphones will cause rustling. That said, they are amazing on flights. YOu can still here some of the higher frequency hiss from the cabin, but the majority of the noise is cancelled out. You barely notice you're on a flight essentially, just don't touch the headphones on the seat or you end up with rustling. Conclusion: I think they are worth the money and they have a 2 year warranty which I love. If you plan to walk around or run in them don't buy these, they are too big to move around too much and won't be enjoyable on the move.

Great sound. Very very crisp, so lots of clarity if that’s what you’re into. Average bass. Good noise cancellation.

One of the few noise cancelling models that is genuinely good as a pair of hifi headphones
NOTE - I did not buy these from Amazon, but rather from another retailer. These aren't wireless, so if that is important to you then these clearly aren't the right choice. Their noise cancelling isn't in the same class as the better Sony or Bose (or even the latest JBL) noise cancelling models so if ultimate noise cancelling capability is what you seek then, again, these aren't the right choice. On the other hand the noise cancelling is a lot better than you might expect after reading some reviews and it is pretty effective at cancelling low frequency steady noise, such as on airliners or trains. So for killing constant background noise on trains and aircraft (which I suspect is still the principal target for noise cancelling headphones) these do work well. However, these do something none of the alternative noise cancelling headphones can do, they offer genuinely excellent sound performance, and that sound is consistent whether noise cancelling is switched on or off. They are somewhat bright, but not unnaturally so, bass is restrained but sufficiently rich (some might say bass is a little light, I'd say rather they're not bass heavy like Beats). The mid range is nicely done. These haven't been tuned for a dry analytical response, but neither have they gone for the sort of bass heavy immediate appeal of so many consumer models and overall whilst on the bright side of a neutral balance they are very smooth and enjoyable all round performers. They sound very similar (personally, I'd say just the same) as the well regarded ATH MSR7 standard model, which is quite an achievement for a noise cancelling model.Although the noise cancelling isn't as effective as some others, it also does not have that weird feeling on the ears of other models and feels much more natural. The system actually works well to suppress background noise when flying, helped by pretty good passive noise isolation, which is the reason I bought them. If flying I find these work very well, and when in a hotel room they serve as genuinely excellent non-noise cancelling headphones, personally I think that lifts them above alternatives from Bose, Sony, JBL etc which offer superb noise cancelling (albeit at the cost of a rather odd feeling in the ears) but do not offer sound in the same class as these Audio Technica's.Another area where these pull ahead of rivals is build quality, they have a very solid feel and use nice materials, the overall impression is of a pair of well made, premium headphones. By contrast, alternatives feel cheap and plasticky. Battery life is excellent, and should the battery die then they perform extremely well in passive mode and still offer decent sound isolation.Criticisms? A carry case rather than the provided soft pouch would be nice.Overall these are probably the most under rated and neglected noise cancelling headphones on the market, something which is perhaps reflected in the good discounts which are available. Audio Technica have made a pair of high quality hifi headphones and then added noise cancellation which does not compromise sound quality, very few alternatives offer such capability (probably the only other ones I'd genuinely say the same about are the extremely expensive AKG N90Qs). They're far better made than alternative noise cancelling headphones from the main rivals in this area. I'd put it this way, if you buy these headphones then you could quite comfortably treat them as both a home use high performance pair of hifi headphones and also as a good pair of travelling headphones, that is quite an achievement by Audio Technica. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic T5p gen 2 headphones which are outstanding but which aren't travel friendly despite the "p" supposedly standing for portable (although I'd recommend the T5p gen 2 100% to anybody seriously interested in them). Sadly I suspect this more refined and perhaps subtle approach is not really what the market wants so they may plough a rather lonely path.

Very good for use inside at home
Very good for use inside at home, office ... Very detailed with my Hi-Res audio player. I was very happy with them few hours but when I took them outside ....This headphones are extremly sensitive for any touch, wind, walk ... which generate a rush to the ears, not depend the Noise cancelling is ON or OFF. For this reason returned back.

Genial!
