Going for a nice walk in the British countryside: millions of people do it. It should be the simplest thing in the world, but for the Mid-Bucks Walking Club it never is. At the heart of the show is Bob, the vain, deluded, tragic-comic organiser of the rambling group. Over the course of the series Bob battles to keep his place from newcomer Christine, who is determined to jump into his boots and steal his best friend Tom. A brilliantly original comedy following the rivalries, friendships and love stories of a walking club over a summer. The Great Outdoors is a single-camera sitcom that invites you to put on your walking boots and explore the countryside along with the engaging and eclectic group of characters who make up the local rambling club.

Great comedy!
This is a very good comedy show and for me the three episodes were just right in telling the story of the walking group over one summer season. All of the characters are well portrayed and the comedy timing is 100%. The single camera filming is excellent and you're soon part of the group as they ramble along meeting various obstacles on the way and creating quite a few of their own. The scripts are sharp and very well written and no cliche is left unturned which adds to the fun.I was unsure about buying this DVD but am very glad that I did buy it, better 3 excellent episodes which tell a complete story than 6 average ones going nowhere. It starts slowly but takes off when the scene changes to Ruth Jones on the train, after that you just know that anything can and will happen!

There hasnt been anything as funny as this on TV for years
DVD arrived on time in excellent condition even though it is 2nd hand. It was just as funny as I remembered from the first time I saw it.

Perfect pastural comedy
I bought this after my brother kept quoting from it during conversation and hence i needed to know what he was on about! I really enjoyed the gentle pace, comedy and scenery and was disappointed that the dvd had only 3 episodes on it.... a shame as i had just got into it. Perfect tv for a Sunday afternoon with a great cast.

The Great Outdoors about a walking group, not for me personally.
Not keen. I am so used to Ruth Jones playing Stella or Nessa, I didn't take to her playing this part, it was not her. Well not to my mind. I found it all a bit disturbing, and realise it was a send up of walking groups, which I have always intended to join, but never got around to doing, and it has somewhat put me off now.

Will they make more?
This is exactly what the BBC do brilliantly, a gentle, pleasant british comedy. It is an unusual setting for a comedy, but the laid back warm summery countryside and varied characters just draw you in, it almost makes you want to join a walking club. These three episodes have been stored on my Sky box since it aired and have been watched again and again. I am still hoping they will make more, but in the meantime I can free up some space on my Sky box with this DVD.

I expected more somehow
Being an avid walker I expected more from this. Although there were some humorous parts I felt that it was more about poking fun at walkers rather than being a humorous take on this activity. If you want to watch something thats light and more of a background programme then the DVD is fine. The obvious talent of the actors is not used to their full potential - shame!

Disappointing
I did not find the first three episodes very funny but I had the feeling that the characters were developing towards a point where they might become interesting and potentially amusing, particularly the Katherine Parkinson character. Unfortunately, the series ended right there. Pity. Very strange.
