Compelling Biographical Film
"The Hurricane" is a compelling biographical film directed by Norman Jewison, featuring Denzel Washington in the leading role. The movie chronicles the life of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer wrongfully convicted of a triple murder, and his arduous journey for exoneration.Denzel Washington's portrayal of Rubin Carter is nothing short of outstanding. His powerful and emotive performance brings to life the turmoil, resilience, and unwavering spirit of the wrongly accused boxer. It sheds light on the racism prevalent in the justice system and society during that era, skillfully highlighting the systemic biases and injustices faced by Carter and individuals like him.The storytelling is gripping, taking the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. From the intense boxing sequences that showcase Carter's skill and determination to the heartbreaking moments of his incarceration, the film weaves a narrative that tugs at the heartstrings and prompts introspection on societal injustices.Jewison's direction is commendable, skillfully weaving together different timelines and viewpoints to create a compelling and coherent storyline. The supporting cast, including Vicellous Reon Shannon as Lesra Martin, plays a pivotal role in highlighting the strength of friendship and the unyielding determination to fight for justice. The cinematography and soundtrack further enhance the film’s impact, capturing the essence of different periods, immersing the audience in the struggles and triumphs of Carter's life. The emotional depth is conveyed not just through dialogue but also through visual storytelling, enriching the viewing experience."The Hurricane" is a poignant and thought-provoking film that goes beyond a mere retelling of events. It resonates with themes of justice, perseverance, and the human spirit, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. It's a testament to the resilience of the human soul in the face of adversity and a reminder of the importance of fighting for truth and justice.Overall, "The Hurricane" stands as a testament to Denzel Washington's remarkable acting abilities, Norman Jewison's skilled direction, and the powerful true story it brings to the screen, making it a must-watch for those who appreciate compelling storytelling and stirring performances.

Denzel Washington never disapoints
A great true life film about injustice and corruption where it shouldn't be. A man resigned to his fate and the steadfast unrelenting dedication of a couple of people struggling to gain his freedom. Great acting. Even at the end I knew what the outcome would be but still held my breath. In reality Rubin Carter shows what it is to be human. Much like Nelson Mandela also showed the world.

Feel ashamed, to live in a land where justice is a game
Like many people my first introduction to Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter was through Bob Dylan’s brilliant 1976 song ‘Hurricane’. This film features that song and fills in many of the details. Carter is brilliantly portrayed by Denzel Washington giving a career defining performance for which he received, rightly in my view, a Golden Globe. This is essentially the story of how the American justice system’s institutionalised racism was able to take 2 young black men (Carter was convicted alongside his unfortunate fan John Artis who just happened to be in the wrong place) and fit them up for a crime they did not commit. The film also features the friendship that develops between Carter and Lesra Martin who implausibly but truthfully was found and mentored by 3 Canadian entrepreneurs who not only mentored him but took up the case of Rubin Carter. The film has been criticised for being selective with the facts. As far as I can tell the facts of the case are all portrayed accurately and perhaps what some people find uncomfortable is the fact that as Bob Dylan put it “You couldn’t help but be ashamed, to live in a land where justice is a game”. Highly recommended.

A very strong and inspiring real life tale
This is the story of boxer Rubin Carter who was wrongly convicted of a triple murder in New Jersey in 1966, not once but twice! Without wanting to give too much away the film focuses on his time in prison and he uses that to go through his case piece by piece to find all of its flaws which he publishes in his book while still inside. He also trains to make his body a weapon. He eventually receives outside help from a boy he reads his book and believes in him, and his family take up his cause despite lofty opposition. He is eventually freed in 1985 when he takes his case to the Court of Appeal despite all the risk this carried. This is definitely well worth a watch if only to appreciate Denzel Washington’s master class of a performance and excellent narration. The film will also introduce you to a real life land mark piece of history if not already familiar to you.I have also read that the film is slightly biased as it skips a lot of Carter’s violent past and paints him almost like a saint. But that is only a minor criticism and definitely shouldn’t be a reason to skip this movie.

A truly beautiful film.
Whilst downloading "The Hurricane" I was not expecting too much. I had watched, "Million Dollar Baby", "Creed" and 15 minutes of "Raging Bull" as part of my research for a screenplay I had been hired to write. Two days into boxing films I was really just ticking a box. The latter, a Scorcese classic by all accounts, was a huge disappointment. So far out of date in its tone and character portrayals, I found it unwatchable.Enter "The Hurricane". Sure the film is about a boxer, but it is not about boxing. Both the screenplay and the directing are world class. I had set out to make beat point notes, character observations and absorb some of the details about prison life. In fact, by 5 minutes in I was lost in the story. The story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter is a powerful and emotive tale. The counterpoint characters, a young man by the name of Lesra Martin and his educational sponsors, bring a touching dynamic to an otherwise bitter tale of racism, lies and deceit.I don't want to say any more, other than watch it. It is a beautiful telling of the story. Very moving.
