BABYLON DVD - The strangest film of 2023!
Anotherr film I found hard to rate. I don't normally drop names of other reviewers but...Do read "Shaun's" review 25 May. Brilliant and he says practically everything I want to say, so to try and not plagiarise... As the film began, I felt confident it was going to be "different - Voiding Elephants! Then the infamous orgy scene. What a mess! Camera swirling away, in and out, headache time, and surely this sequence could have been shortened by a good 10mins and still contained the important scenes? To the main body of the film and we meet "Nellie" (and here I must praise Marot Robbie. maybe her acting divides opinions - does it? but here she goes through every emotion possible, including physical hardships, and comes out as THE star of the film). Now we come to the boring bit (to me anyeay) "Nellie" hitting her mark (or failing to), here, also is a an odd mix of humour and drama, which does feature off and on throughout the film. An incredible party scene which makes David Walliams "Little Britain" seem very tame (no spoilers). Brad Pitt cannot be didmissed (top billed). His performence is so low key, yet hits all the right notes. A splendid performence. In fact the entire cast is good, and I must give special mention to Toby Mc Guire as a gambling/mob boss. His scenes and the nightclub sequence are truly scary. I mentioned the whole cast...see if you recognise Olivia Wilde? I didn't, and I am not telling you which part she has!!! Eric Roberts, looking even odder than usual, plays Nellie's dad, and features in the bonkers "snake fight" scene. Frustrating, Infuriating and absolutely chock full of incredibly imaginative us of the "F" word!! and way too long. At the end I realised apart from one sewuwnce I hadn't been bored - I actually liked the film, with all it's imperfections (my opinion). It is definitley Adults only and if swearing continually offends - be aware. If memory serves there is no actual SEX but some badly filmed nudity, most unerotic!! I think this is a film all lovers of cinema, whether you like classic or different independant films, you should give this exptic quirky film a chance.Currently an amazing £4 - The DVD (not BluRay) is excellent quality, terrific colour, soundtrack and subtitles (and Margot's best ever performence

NO SPOILERS: This would have been a very good 2 hour film; sadly it is 2:39.
This would have been a very good 2 hour film; sadly it is 2:39. There is a black-screen at about the 2 hour mark; and I did wonder if the film had ended there. Instead, I was 'treated' to a segue which didn't really work for me, and a disappointing ending. This was a shame as up until that point, it had been an engrossing film, with the leads acting their socks off.

Difficult to rate!
Without hesitation I can state that this film, in my humble opinion, is unclassifiable. It is an insane blend of excellent and 'awful' and this makes it difficult to categorise. So please forgive my lengthy reviewThe good: the performances - the ensemble cast look amazing and perform excellently - I couldn't identify a single character that seems miscast or who gave a poor performance, although Toby Maguire's performance is unsettling, it's meant meant to be.The mis-en-scene is beautiful, colours exceptional and camera work is spotless. I cannot emphasise how much this is a truly beautiful film. From what I can grasp, the historical accuracy of the costumes and décor is also exceptional. This film was made for cinema and I'm sad I didn't see it on a huge screen rather than my own modest widescreen TV. However, this leads to my next point...The awkward: The running time is over three hours. As I watched it on Prime, I was free to pause the film at leisure - something I typically never, ever do - so I don't know how I'd have managed in a cinema. I would have love to see this beautiful film on a big screen, but sitting in a cinema and maintaining my attention for that long without a loo break may have been an ask. The film covers enough for a limited series and there was a lot to fit in, and I don't know what could have been cut.Second issue was the intentional anachronisms. Brad Pitt's character, who provides most of the laughs (humorously) quotes Terminator II and Gone With The Wind (with added swears). These are funny and clever. However, there are countless derivative and blatant references or parallels to Singing in the Rain which stand out like a sore thumb. At first I found it smart, but they start mounting up. Then, right at the end, the film makes it clear that these are intentional, but I found it distracting after a while and I can't decided if these improved the film or detracted from it.* * * *here be very minor spoilers. Continue after asterisks if you prefer ***The Unsettling : Very early in the film an elephant dumps on a hapless employee. Its a 'joke' that's telegraphed from a mile away and it begins with a close-up of the elephant's twitching sphincter followed by a continuous gush of what an elephant produces when it empties its bowels. Later in the film a particular character projectile vomits (Exorcist-like and copiously) all over people and furnishings at a swanky event. As with the elephant scene I am unsure if this was intended for humour or shock value in the manner it was over-done. Alternatively, it may have been there to enhance the 'Babylon' theme in addition to the evidence of promiscuous sex at the film's onset which are reminiscent of pre-code sexual gratuity.*** end of minor spoilers ****Consequently, I think the film as a piece of art is a 5, but as a film it's either a 4 or a 2 depending on your tastes and your tolerance for the film's faults.

A poor watered-down attempt to do an adult version of "Singin' In The Rain".
I like Brad Pitt, but this film (Like the atrocuous "Bullet Train") is a waste of his talents. Basically it's the 1930's, and silent movie Hollywood is plumbing new depths in narcissistic self-indulgence. Then the talkies arrive, and the studios are thrown into a panic to convert to motion pictures with sound. (Sound familiar?) Too much gratuitous sex and violence and nowhere near enough actual story. Every character is an unlikeable, self-obsessed monster who just uses people for their own ends before discarding them when their usefulness fades. The film tries too hard to shock (in one scene they go to an underground club to whatch a muscleman eat live rats for money) but all this does in underline how awful the main characters are. And then about halfway through the producers seem to have run out of ideas and the whole thing becomes a blatant ripoff of "Singin' In The Rain", just without the humour, or the music, or engaging characters you actually care about. There were at least 2-3 times I reached for the remote to put this trash out of its misery, but I persevered; what a waste of an evening...

A love letter to cinema
Saw a quote from the director saying it was a poison pen letter to Hollywood and a love letter to cinema. Reckon that's a pretty good summary.

Great film
This is a great film about the beginning of Hollywood. Loosely based on facts and real events

Babilonia hollywoodiana
