Beneficial addition to house plant potting mix
We have several large potted house plants that are well enough established to be a real pain to re-pot. When we do re-pot them, we take extra care to give them a well balanced and fertile potting mix, that will sustain them for a good long time. The addition of Wakefield Biochar to our potting mix is a great way to support beneficial soil microbes, improve soil fertility, water retention and drainage. The Biochar is a fine powder which is easy to incorporate into a soil mix along with compost and a good quality balanced fertilizer. You know what they say... a happy house plant makes a happy home. - One tip. Prepare your soil mix a week or two in advance, and keep it will watered. This will give the bio-char some time to work its magic on the soil, and not tie-up nutrients the plants are hungry for.

Outdoor plants love this added to their soil
I did some research about mixing my own soil mix to use in my outdoor container garden. I kept reading about Biochar and was curious how it might impact my container garden. I used a mix of potting soil, Perlite, Peat moss and Biorchar. I read about which percent of each to use. Since Biochar was the least amount used I invested in this brand. I used one bag to mix in soil that filled about 12 containers, racnging in size between 8-20" size. My flowers, herbs and tomato plants have not ever been more fruitful. I'm watching tomatoes and flower flourish in early July, here in the Midwest and I believe the soil has made them so happy!

Very soft, this isn't charcoal pieces
I wasn't paying attention when I bought this and thought I was just buying horticultural charcoal. This, though, is a really soft, nice soil amendment. I added it to coconut coir. I felt I had to add extra perlite to even out the moisture retention of the mix, but if it's everything the product page (which I finally read in full) says it is, it's a long term improvement for the soil. May be slightly wasted on my mix but eventually all that ends up in my outdoor garden anyway so it works out!

Wakefield Biochar Soil Conditioner
Biochar is the buzz currently in organic gardening. Obviously, if one is serious about organic gardening, then keeping up on the science aspects is important. This Wakefield biochar specifies it is made with renewable tree sources, not cardboards or other burnable trash. Back in the day, I used horticultural charcoal for African Violets. It helps with aeration, and 'sweetening". But it was not known that the particles of horticultural charcoal worked because it enhances beneficial microbial activity, which strengthens the nutrient exchange at the plant roots. Biochar is a type of charcoal. The ash and residue from fireplaces and bbqs are too alkaline to use. This package is a good size to mix enough with planting mediums for several 8-10 inch pots. The Wakefield char is screened so there is a uniformity that easily blends and has no burny odor.
