Lonely Planet Brazilian Portuguese Phrasebook & Dictionary

This is a fantastic little book, with plenty of phrases that will come in useful in your Portuguese conversations. But I would treat it more as a reference, rather than something to learn from. I would recommend Duolingo (completely free via a web app, on Android and Apple App Store) for reading and some listening, and Pimsleur for aural/oral aspects of the language. But for a pocket-sized reference to remind yourself of certain words and phrases, Lonely Planet Brazilian Portuguese is ideal.I should also state that I found some of the pronunciation guide to be a bit off, i.e. closer to continental Portuguese pronunciation. But again, if you use this book only as a supplement to your other learning resources, you'll spot this a mile off and can ignore some of the dubious phonetics. Not too big a deal, and I was reluctant to deduct a star, so consider my mark as four and a half stars. Recommended.

I got this for my son who travels to Brazil quite a lot. He has found it useful. It doesn't cover every eventuality but that would be hard to do in a concise book.But in the whole it is good value and helps you get by.

Excellent book. Clearly set out. Logical. Pocket sized and covers the essentials you'll need. I wouldn't say this is a primary book to learn from but its a good starting point and a good reminder. Must have if going on holiday and just want to learn a few words.

Recently purchased this to help me learn Brazilian Portuguese as my partner is from Brazil. As always lonely planet phrasebooks do not disappoint have bought a few different languages over the years and this is just as good. Filled with useful phrases and helpful tips.

We teach English Conversation words & pronunciation. This is a useful backup tool.

This is a useful little phrase book that came extremely useful during my 2 weeks in Brazil. It is devided into different topics and there is a little dictionary at the back of the book too. Very few people ouside of major cities tourist areas and large hotels speak English and I found myself using the phrase book several times a day and was actually understood!

The selection of phrases and words is excellent and it's written with humour. But the guide to pronunciation just seems wrong. Brazilian Portuguese is not easy to pronounce, and this doesn't seem to help with the difficult letters like r, t, and d.

It's accurate and funny, and has a good way of teaching you how to pronounce the phrases. It also focus on the brazilian culture and language, so it has a lot of stuff about going out, meeting people and sex-related situations. Being Brazilian, it was a good laugh to go through it and see how people interacted with it. Would recommend it for sure.
