A beautiful world
Though this is written in poem format, it is indeed a story. It is a beautiful story that reveals the glory of pre-European involvement in the Americas, specifically the north mid-west. Like many Americans, I had heard the name Hiawatha, and Minnehaha but to understand who they were and why they are important you should read this book. This book takes us through a some what shallow version of the spiritual side of the native tribes of the North American Continent. But for an outsider like me, it was rich indeed! I learned 100 time more than I knew about native culture after reading this book. I recommend it for any American who wants to understand the natives better.

Excellent narration.
My review refers to the audiobook The Song of Hiawatha narrated by William Hootkins. This poem has been a favorite of mine since childhood. Hootkins does an excellent performance, perfectly in rhythm with the cadence of the meter, the passages' emotions well-expressed, and maintaining the mythic atmosphere throughout. I think Longfellow himself would have been extremely pleased to hear it read like this.

The book is a great size and the font is easy to read and flows well throughout the page. Remington's illustrations add detail and interest for the visual person. After all these years, I still can't figure out if the poetry is any good, but I love the story and have a son now so I will pass it along to you.

Hiawatha strong and noble
I loved this tale of Hiawatha. It described his life and his heroic adventures with his friends and, the love of his life Minnehaha. There were some scary stories and one I found very beautiful. I'm glad I read it.

Must Read for Travelling the Shores of Lake Superior.
I always read this classic when traveling through Michigan's upper peninsula or along the shores Lake Superior. The poetic style of verse and stanzas compared to the normal structure of sentences, paragraphs and chapters is easy to get used to. The style conveys the emotions of man's relationship to the natural world with ease. This work is truly a song or epic poem more so than a story or novel.

Memories of a child
I remembered this poem from being a youngster at school. I found it beautiful as indeed I find a lot of the ways of the American Indians. I didn't realise it was so long however or that it told a complete life story. When you read it in poetry books at school you consider it to be a long poem but never realise that the small piece in the book is only an extract of the real thing.

The Song of Hiawatha.
Snippets of this classic have been read by many over the years, but having access to the full narrative provides a word picture of the legends and writings of the Native American tribes presented by Henry Longfellow in a beautifully poetic and descriptive way. This brought back nostalgic memories to my mother of her youth and learning Hiawatha at school.

Poetry for the heart.
This wonderful story of Hiawatha and his tribe, Minnehaha and the spirits that lived in the woods, all told in the most lyrical of poetry, is so uplifting that it grasps the imagination and I just couldn't put it down. Longfellow was a truly gifted story-teller, and to put his story into such moving poetry was the work of genius. Outstanding.

Big favourite memobarelia. Love the questions at the back too, very topical on social awareness.

Song of Hiawatha. book
Remembering this from my childhood, but not realising that the whole poem was so huge. Even though it is set in a fixed rhythm, it somehow doesn`t pall. Has not really dated in its story line, though of course, made much more sad and regretful knowing how real Native Americans are treated in the US since.
