Huge fan
The entire series is useful while learning traditional natal astrology. This book focuses on predictive and timing techniques while the other 2 books focus on chart delineation and semi-advanced techniques

Traditional predictive astrology explained
This is a valuable work for the student of traditional methods, covering profections, directions, solar returns, transits, and the (admittedly useless) firdaria. "Cook-book" interpretations are provided. Particularly valuable is the account of how these relate to each other and their relative importance (just the sort of thing that is missing in Lilly), which makes it probably the oldest astrological work that still has real value for the modern astrologer. One problem with all Dykes's books is the translation. It's not inaccurate (I've checked some of his work against the Latin) but it's over-literal and he has an annoying tendency to replace accepted terminology. One soon gets used to it, however.

Dr. Benjamin Dykes = Compulsory Reading for Astrologers....ALL of Them
Dr. Benjamin Dykes is a godsend to astrology. Let me not mince words here -- this man has outstanding astrological translations and commentary veritably spilling from his every pore. I make my living by this material. It puts food in my mouth and the mouths of my dependents. It is no exaggeration to say that the vast reservoir of wisdom that this young scholar has graciously made available to us has redefined my practice and improved it beyond measure. This stuff is not at all for the faint of heart. It's densely academic. And yet the good Dr. peppers the recondite material with liberal, extensive commentary and observations from his own personal fund of wisdom, experience and knowledge, which is profound. Quite simply, Dr. Benjamin Dykes is my partner , teacher and guide in the study of this noble art, and I strongly urge you to allow him to be yours as well. His books are expensive, and very justifiably so. Every try going to college? Even the goofiest college class will force you to buy a textbook that is at least double what you would pay for one of this scholar's priceless tomes. His books are expensive, but not acquiring them is immeasurably more expensive. I have almost all of them by now and will not stop collecting the academic output of this incredibly fine scholar. This review might sound sycophantic, but this is not typical sycophancy at all -- it is deep, and abiding gratitude. I have never met Dr. Dykes, never laid eyes on him, never spoken with him or corresponded with him. But I want to ensure the continuity of his work, which the entire discipline of modern astrology needs if it hopes to restore itself to the prestige it enjoyed in antiquity and deserves to enjoy again today. There are others. You will not become a complete astrologer by just studying Dr. Dykes alone. You will also have to study his sources, his teachers as well, all of whom merit the deepest study and reverence. This particular work, a translation by the great Abu Ma'shar, has revolutionized (no pun intended) the way I render yearly and monthly forecasts for my clients. Let's put it this way, if you're advising clients using astrology and you do not avail yourself of this material, then in my opinion you are this close to actually committing a dereliction of duty, a malpractice.
