Sarantis, Greek Sweet Fruit Preserve in Syrup, Walnut , Net weight 453g, Glass jar, straight from Chios island:A traditional and delightful Greek custom is the offering of sweet fruit preserves to guests as a symbol of hospitality. They are called sweet fruit preserves or spoon sweets because the usual serving size is a well-filled teaspoon. Fruits, nuts, and vegetables are harvested when firm (often slightly underripe) and made into spoon sweets. These sweets are made with simple, natural ingredients that transform them into something entirely new, exciting, and delicious. It is impossible to provide a single recipe for all spoon sweets. The liquid and sugar measurements vary according to the type of fruit or vegetable used. They are not as dense as jam or jelly. The fruit should remain firm and sit in a nice pool of syrup thick enough to coat a spoon. The fruit in spoon sweets retains its original color, taste, and aroma. The Island of Chios has several spoon sweet specialties including Lemon Blossom Spoon Sweet, Orange and Walnut, just like the one we are offering you now. Walnuts, as nuts, despite the amount of calories contained (a handful of walnuts, about 30 gr., contains 196 calories), have been proven to have very high nutritional value, as many surveys have shown. It is rich in fiber, minerals and vitamins (B6, E). In fact, a handful of walnuts contains Vitamin C as much as half a cup of olive oil. Finally, it doesn’t have cholesterol, it is rich in sterols, also contains high amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, a fact that make them rich in antioxidants. They add value to the Mediterranean diet which offers so much to our health. Spoon sweets are healthy confections, visually pleasing, distinctive, and extremely versatile. Offering them to guests is a wonderful tradition and a sign of "sweet" hospitality.

Sweet, sticky nutty delights!
Bought this for my elderly father who has been very poorly and not eating. I can only review on the basis of what he told me and that was that he loved them. The walnuts weren't crunchy but still firm, the syrup sweet and nutty and apparently very moorish when poured over ice-cream! I was getting increasingly concerned about getting some goodness into my dad, looking for something different and tasty to perk up his appetite. These certainly did the job and helped to put him on the mend. Would definitely buy again

Crunchy!
The texture is a bit surprising. If you've ever eaten a pickled walnut, these are completely different! The nut has the texture of a nut, and the shell is a bit crispy! Not my favourite in the range. I enjoyed the nut but the syrup has a caramel flavour, which can be a bit overpowering for my taste.

Great sweets; takes me straight back to holidays in Greece. We have our sweets with full fat Greek yoghurt and it balances out the taste beautifully.
