Hop to it - versatile fountain pen
I'm a bit of a fan of Hongdian pens and I quite like bunnies too.The Year of the Rabbit fountain pen was just too tempting to resist. The cigar shaped pen in French Navy blue, has a delicate silver embossed design with a rabbit on the body, one on the cap and even one on the nib. The cap sports a sturdy silver clip and screws onto the pen with a one and a quarter turn. It posts well, however it's a bit too long for me once posted; as I'm worried that frequent posting might damage the embossing, this suits me just fine. The pen includes a piston converter but can take ink cartridges. The ink bore is 3.4mm so if using ink cartridges check you barrel size. Hongdian do affordable cartridges suitable for their pens. It's not just a pretty pen though. The long blade nib has been compared to an architect grind nib, writing with a variable line; wide when drawn horizontally and narrower in the vertical stroke. Unlike an architect nib which sometimes can be scratchy the Hongdian nib writes smoothly with a good flow of ink that's not too wet. It makes a great pen for ink drawing because of its interesting variations in line weight and is a joy to use.In summary, you are getting something beautiful and of excellent quality at a budget price.

A reliable, comfortable pen with classic styling
I've been eyeing this pen since it was announced and it does not disappoint. Hongdian are known for making reliable, smooth-writing quality pens. I have an N7 and it has never given me a hard start, no matter how long I go between uses (often a month or more). I expect the N23 will be the same, given the lined cap and screw thread closure. The lacquer and finish are flawless, the rabbit and willow engraving clear and sharp. The clip is firm without being tight, and the pen uncaps with 1 full turn. The filled pen is a good weight and balance at 21g uncapped, or 35g posted (the pen does post, but I don't recommend it as it will wear on the finish). Unposted, the balance point is near the centre, so sits between hand and fingers in a tripod grip - ideal for low-fatigue writing. The Hongdian-branded converter fills readily and fully, and contains a glass ball to break surface tension. The 'long blade' nib writes wetly and smoothly, and gives a full Western medium line. It is firm with a little bit of spring. The tipping is rounded, and doesn't give much line variation - it's not a substitute for an architect, waverley, fude or naginata togi nib, though it has a hint of those qualities. Reverse writing is surprisingly smooth - toothy, but not at all scratchy. The generous tip could probably be custom ground to give more line variation if desired.Lastly, it does a lovely job of showing off the qualities of shading inks. Here's a sample of Wearingeul's 'The Song of Reed' on ink-friendly Clairefontaine paper.

Mum, a 76 year old pen collector, loves it.
Trawling around the internet looking at pen collectors shops at horrid translucent expensive plastic fountain pens, this gorgeous pen popped up on my feed. I bought the real one, mum's favourite colour. I saw the description said it had rabbits engraved, so it was perfect for a bunny-lover. When she unwrapped it, it surpassed its Amazon description. The colour is a serious shade of classic teal. The engraving was sharp and detailed. The rabbits are not cute bunnies but detailed images of rabbits, very much like Edwardian engravings. Plus there is a tiny bunny on the nib. I had been worried it would have a harsh stainless steel nib as it was an Amazon find, but no worries, as it's now my mum's favourite writing pen. A+++++

OK, But not the Greatest Pen I've Ever Bought
For a relatively cheap pen it's OK, but the nib performance is fairly poor. Nice to try but I wouldn't buy it again.

Every time I use this pen the more I like it.
Feels well made - the pattern is beautiful in brass. The clip is solid (not hollowed out in the back like many competitors). The flow with the medium long knife is really great. Better or equal to some of my more expensive fountain pens.

Chinese lucky rabbit totem!
In 2023, my problems with my work at the University of Malta began, which continue to this day. I never saw how everything could be turned upside down. Then I suddenly noticed that Chinese New Year 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit and read about the Chinese Lucky Rabbit Totem! The rabbit totem offers magical and mysterious powers and maintains deep connections with the sacred and eternal spirit of the earth. The rabbit totem animal serves as a symbol of intelligence, sensitivity and shamanic power, as rabbits have strong powers of perception and intuition. The rabbit totem represents positive creative problem solving, courage and a quick mind. It reminds us of our need to control our fears in life in order to discover our true potential. For me, this fountain pen has become a symbol of this struggle. Otherwise, the fountain pen itself is unique, another example of magnificent Chinese perfection.
