It works
So far it works fine. I am using it when making my own soil for medical cannabis indoor cultivation to make sure the soil had cooked and the temperature dropped below 100° F but preferably below 80°. The probe itself is a bit too thin for my liking but if careful with it I'm sure it'll last a while. I saw another review from a guy who used this exact device in his compost pile but he left it stuck in the pile outdoors all year round and somehow the top broke off. It was still working but it was kind of hanging what looked like a wire of some sort that was holding the probe and the top piece together. I'm not sure how he managed to break it because supposedly he didn't do anything to it that it just broke but I just can't see how that can happen unless physically break it yourself. Anyhow, I've had it for 2 months already and I have been checking 5 separate 55 gallon totes with soil and I'm getting what seems like accurate readings and it does the job. I couldn't ask for more. Highly recommend!

Better than my meat thermometer!
If I have a complaint, it would be how tightly the thermometer is going into the sleeve-protector.Easy to use & leave hanging near the compost pile for a quick check.

Lens gets foggy.
Lens fogs up. Kinda short but seems accurate.

Helps So much
I am loving knowing exactly what temp my compost is. I have just been leaving the thermometer stuck in the pile, since I use an old metal trash can with holes drilled in, and have the lid on it. It looks EXACTLY the same as the day I put it in and it has been a couple months. I do no stir lasagna compost, so if you do that too, I would recommend lifting the thermometer a little bit to get an accurate read of the most recent layer's temp

Nothing not to love...
There is nothing not to love about this thermometer so far. It works exactly as expected. Also, we love the length and the fact that it has a cover.

A useful addition to my composting practice
They tell you your compost pile should be "warm". But what's "warm"? Just what is the right temperature to know decomposition is happening? And how am I supposed to know? I'm NOT shoving my hands in that pile of garbage.I don't want to oversell this thermometer. It's not going to magically make your composting more effective. It still takes a lot of work to make the bacteria and fungi feel at home in order to do their thing. But what it's going to do is give you insight into how things are going beneath the surface of the soil.It has a long, metal prong coming out of it – like a longer version of a meat thermometer – that you stab into the heart compost pile to get a reading. I keep mine in the bin at all times, but you can also store it in the plastic sleeve that comes with it so you don't stab yourself. If the temperature of your bin is in the green zone, you're actively composting! If it's in the red – are you sure it's not on fire? Mine is just under the green, which tells me I probably need to add water and agitate it a little, right? You can compost without a thermometer, but for the cost I think this beauty is hard to pass up. It's a great insight into the state of your compost pile so you can let nature work effectively for you.

Soil thermometer
Was easy to read and like the extra long post that goes into the soil or bale of hay
