couch multiplayer set in space.
This game is a great couch multiplayer- and they are very far and few between now.Its got all the good stuff from Borderlands 1 and 2 and the space themes is enough to make it fresh. Its got a lot of little shout outs to B1 and B2 which is great for a giggle, however I can imagine this will be lost on people who haven't played the other games much. Its a tie over game until Borderlands 3 on 'next gen' systems, and at times it does feel like a gimmick version or expansion pack for B2, but that doesn't bother me at all.

An enjoyable entry into the series with everything you'd expect from a Borderlands game
The first Borderlands game brought something new to the first person shooter table and gave us a fun-filled, solid little game to play through. Borderlands 2 did what a sequel should do - improve upon the original formula and make it better in every single regard. Some might say that the series is starting to show signs of aging now that we're on the third game but I can assure you this is not the case! Here's why.-------------------------------------------------------Story-------------------------------------------------------The Pre-Sequel takes place between the first and second games and explores important characters and plot events from the two games. The story is told through the perspective of Athena (one of the playable characters) and charters how Handsome Jack came into power and how this leads to events that begin in Borderlands 2. The story in Borderlands 2 was pretty good but Pre-Sequel's story pales slightly in comparison. The story in this game is mostly about Handsome Jack, his rise to power and revolves around fleshing out some familiar characters so the story feels more focused and it shows. Familiar faces pop-up now and again providing fans of the series with a greater understanding of the plot but the whole host of new characters are just as interesting. Witty one-liners, jokes, references and all the usual Borderlands-esque style of writing returns here and it's just great, cheeky fun. Thanks to the setting of this adventure, the locations and areas on offer just seem to "pop" more and breath some fresh air into exploring. Caverns, huge open areas, and rivers of lava are all things that you're going to be seeing and exploring and it's a nice change of pace from the previous two games thanks to the versatility of having no gravity in most areas.I thought Jack was a great character in Borderlands 2 so it's nice to see more of him here. One thing I have noted is that the main villain here really needs more screen-time. Jack CONSTANTLY taunted you and irritated you throughout the Borderlands 2 story and the same needs to happen here as well. The Borderlands games are not renowned for their story but it's still an important part of the game and this one delivers on the things it needed to deliver on. Add in the fact that all of the playable characters are returning characters from the previous games and the story just goes full circle. It goes without saying that if you've played either of the previous games you will gain a greater understanding of the story. The playable characters actually communicate with each other and towards NPCs which was such a good idea! It adds a little bit more depth to the story and the characters that we already know and love. Fans of the series will enjoy the references and character development whilst new players will find that the story is fun, cheeky and enjoyable. These games don't take themselves too seriously so as long as you don't either you'll have a great time playing through this!-------------------------------------------------------Graphics-------------------------------------------------------Technically speaking, the last two games didn't break any boundaries in terms of graphics but the cell-shading style of presentation that these games have is great and I couldn't imagine it being any other way. The original Borderlands game had a lot of brown and grey areas which you just got bored of seeing after a while. The second game improved on this by adding icy glaciers, volcanos, dark and creepy caverns and a whole host of other areas to explore. The Pre-Sequel provides a much more interesting setting this time around because you're on Pandora's moon. You've got huge areas to explore and a great backdrop to constantly remind you where you are and it's all a treat for the eyes.I wouldn't say that the graphics have been improved for this game but they were never bad to begin with. The cell-shading style of the Borderlands games is something different to look at and this game is no different in comparison. Character models are great, the variety of enemies and their art styles is interesting and the areas that you get to explore just feel fresh. The Pre-Sequel just sticks to the same formula as before except now, you're looking at things in space!-------------------------------------------------------Gameplay-------------------------------------------------------Those familiar with the previous games will know exactly how this game works and controls before even putting it into the console. The four new playable characters Athena, Nisha, Wilhelm and Claptrap each provide different skills, bonuses and abilities that you can choose to upgrade as you play through the game. The skill trees, gun upgrades and progression are the meat of any Borderlands game and this one is no different and, while the characters are defined by their unique action skill it's up to you, the player, to build them however you choose. Borderlands 2 offered a great number of skills that you could unlock and upgrade in order to make your character handle exactly how you wanted and it's the same principle here. Want a character designed around dealing as much damage as possible? How about a character with tons of health? If you're playing with others, why not try and be the healer of the group? The skills this time around seem more wacky, crazy and awesome than before and this only adds to the fun! The character skins and customization options also make a welcome return allowing you to further create your character. Without making it sound like a bad thing, it's the exact same system as Borderlands 2.The upgrades and abilities might be a big part of the Borderlands series but it's the insane guns and shoot n' loot system that attracted people in the first place. Borderlands 2 had a LOT of guns, some that shot fireballs, some that shot lightning, some that fired rockets, the list goes on and on. This time around, you've still got all of that but with the introduction of laser weapons and the cryo element, you've got even more toys to play with! The new laser weapons and cryo element are fun to use but after you've used them for a while, you'll wonder why they weren't introduced sooner. The game starts off a little dry on the guns by only giving you basic pistols and the like but this is to be expected. The loot system seems to be more generous this time around as I was finding green rarity items very early on. Before long you'll be running around with a rifle that shoots rockets and a huge laser cannon that just melts faces. Freezing an enemy with cryo and then watching them shatter into millions of pieces is quite satisfying! The addictive nature of seeking out loot chests, farming enemies and finding new and improved gear keeps you coming back for more everytime and it's why the series has done so well.In between playing the main story, hunting down loot chests and slaying hundreds of enemies you can embark on the numerous side quests that the game has to offer. Some missions offer interesting rewards like guns, shields, mods and skins whilst some missions are just plain silly or a reference to something. It's a familiar system to the previous games but it also has the same (and sometimes annoying) factor in that you have to backtrack to the quest-giver in order to complete the mission and receive the rewards. Some players might not see this as an issue but, having played both of the previous games, I can safely say that this system could have been re-worked slighty. The added playtime that these missions provide is nice because, much like the previous titles, the main story might not hold your attention long enough.Being on the moon means that you're able to experience zero-gravity and this really provides a different take on the combat. Along with the zero-gravity comes added options on how to deal with enemies. You can shoot their O2 masks and watch as they rapidly lose health or you can jump high into the air and slam down on them and nearby enemies. Using the slam move effectively might take a little getting used to as jumping into a crowd of enemies is a quick way to get put into Fight For Your Life mode! The areas in this game are generally bigger in every sense, allowing you to run, jump, glide and slam to your hearts content. The added verticality means that you can approach combat in different ways and it's great to experience this in a Borderlands game. Some areas and levels still have that familiar linear design to them but for the most part, the combat has been given a fresh new angle that you didn't even know it needed. You need to be careful whilst you're out and about exploring because you're constantly losing oxygen (unless you're playing as Claptrap) but it can be replenished fairly easily since enemies often drop O2 canisters and you can upgrade it with various pieces of equipment you'll find but it's still something you need to watch. Having to replenish your oxygen sometimes breaks up your exploration or combat but it's up to you to figure out whether this is a good or bad thing since I personally don't find it too much trouble.Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is another enjoyable entry into the series that only slightly improves upon the original formula. The number one complaint about this game is that it's too similar to Borderlands 2. Sure, you might look at this game and say that it's basically just Borderlands 2 DLC but, even if that were the case, is that really a bad thing? The Pre-Sequel delivers on everything a Borderlands game should deliver on and if you enjoyed anything that the previous titles had to offer it's hard to see how you wouldn't enjoy this romp through space. Those of you who are looking for something new and exciting within the Borderlands series might be a little disappointed but the popular phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" rings true here. Borderlands 2 players are going to be split into either the group that loved Borderlands 2 and can't wait to play this or the group that is disappointed at how similar this game is to Borderlands 2. New players may want to pick up the previous games to understand what all the fuss is about but the rest of you are in for a treat because what's not to like about crazy gun combos, deep character progression, customization, co-op, witty dialogue and funny characters?PROS+ More Borderlands+ Zero gravity feels great to play around with+ The series still retains the deep character progression and upgrades that we all know and love+ The story is a nice filler for those loyal to the seriesCONS- Provides the Borderlands experience but doesn't add too much of anything new- Story length is shorter than before

Awesome!
Such a fantastic game! If you have enjoyed the previous Borderlands games you will love this one! It is set in-between borderlands one and two, and has some fantastic new characters and features. For example, as the game is based in space, there is limited oxygen. This leads to having to watch how much O2 you have left and make sure you don't run out. Gameplay is fantastic, weapons are brilliant and a tonne of new guns and gun features. This is possibly the best Borderlands game out of the three!

A step backwards, sadly....
I thought I'd run through this a couple of times before posting any kind of review. Most of the reviews here seem to be from avid Borderlands fans of which I count myself as one, and therefore yes, I was really hoping to be writing up a 5star review here.. Most of the reviews too seem to say this is more of the same fantastic fare from gearbox, but here I beg to differ. Don't get me wrong, this is great entertainment for the most part and indeed, had THIS been Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 2 then followed as the 3rd in the series, everyone would, I have no doubt whatsoever be writing to say what a massive step forward Borderlands 2 is, how they have sorted out the very many glitches in the pre-sequel, and how it's at least twice as big as the pre-sequel.The glitches for the most part don't spoil the enjoyment, though as I am writing I have some Scavs (enemies) standing around. I cannot shoot them, I can only melee their live away, but they never die. Oh, and the mission has frozen because a robot I am supposed to be escorting has downed tools. These games are thoroughly tested and re tested, so whatever went wrong here? Add to that the total unoriginality of the plot lines, some of which seem badly thought out, and many of which are just plain lazy.If you haven't bought it, I'd wait for the price to come down at least, and don't expect it to be on a par with Borderlands 2, because it isn't even close.Right, where did I put Borderlands 2....

What were you thinking?
I love Borderlands and Borderlands 2 for PS3. I still play them now. The possibilities for arming your characters really are infinite and you can wander freely in the world. I couldn't wait to play this game and packed in after 30 minutes. It's too linear. You have to follow the story and it's like an early COD in that respect. It's really poor and the winning formula has been forgotten. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed with anything I've ever purchased.
