This is a very unique book that combines recipes, oral history, and a look at the culture of the Choctaw-Apache tribe to which author Robert Caldwell belongs. An introduction presents a background of the tribe's history in a way that would be of interest to those learning about their own heritage and the general public as well. I appreciated Caldwell's attention to the role of bigger social and economic forces as well as local customs.After that the book is divided into sections devoted to various key ingredients and cooking techniques, both recent and traditional "old time" culinary heritage.I found the conclusion, which focuses on both the individual health and wellness and community-building aspects of food culture, inspiring. I don't know of other "cookbooks" which are as thoughtful about the role of the food they feature.

Caldwell's book is a wonderful example of the role of food in cultural identity
Caldwell's book is a wonderful example of the role of food in cultural identity. Whether an every day dish or special occasion, food ties families and communities together. There is a friendly flow to the pages that invites the reader to try the included recipes as well as think of the role of food in their own family.As more Native communities join in the efforts to decolonize their diets books such as Caldwell's will serve as important examples and inspiration for other communities to discuss their foodways.

not only for its fine grasp of history
This is a delightful book, not only for its fine grasp of history, but for the myriad recipes contained within that come out of the traditions of the indigenous culture of the area of focus. It mixes rigorous historiography with a light touch that keeps the reader engaged. I would recommend this book highly to both historians and chefs.

Well-written, inspired, delicious
A wonderful and inspired book. I haven't finished it yet, but already it's made me think about food a little differently--plus I've test driven a couple recipes with great success!
