The Stukeley plays: 'The Battle of Alcazar' by George Peele and 'The Famous History of the Life and Death of Captain Thomas Stukeley (Revels Plays Companion Library)

These are two sixteenth-century Renaissance English plays on a famous battle fought in Alcázer el-Quibir in 1578 between the Kingdoms of Portugal (under King Sebastian I) and Morocco, with assistance from English mercenaries. Both plays are wonderful and could be staged today with great success. The two works are the only modern editions available in English (the original dramas were published using hard-to-read Fraktur type) and are superbly well-edited. What a joy.
