and I think that Kara Tointon is the best actress who ever portrayed Maria
The Sound of Music was really a festive treat last Christmas, and I do hope that ITV will continue with other live musicals this year. This comment is coming from someone who have seen lot of stage presentations of the sound of music on both sides of the Atlantic, and I think that Kara Tointon is the best actress who ever portrayed Maria. In my book she is a lot better and realistic than Julie Andrews herself. She was fabulous and no wonder she is begin dubbed as a national treasure. My only disappointment with this presentation itself is that there were some trimmings to from the original libretto to make the show's length 2 hours. That was really a pity. But other than that I don't think that I could praise this television broadcast enough. If you really enjoy live theatre, than this DVD is a must own. I already ordered my second copy from amazon to make sure I have a spare as its definitely one of my favourite things.

Much more natural than Julie and Christopher
This was lovely. Kara Tointon looked and sounded excellent as Maria, and was much more natural than Julie Andrews. The children were a delight especially Gretl and they were natural. Nice to see the two songs included that were axed from the original stage show and I can't say I miss the 'jolly hockey sticks' of 'I have confidence'. Maria Friedman, long one of my favourites, was great at the Mother Abbess. I also liked the fact that the Baroness was more of an airhead than a 'piece of work' - it's actually another character who tells Maria that she knows she's in love with the Captain and she does this innocently. Julian Overden is, again, more natural than Christopher Plummer.I get cross with people who give orders and say 'buy this, don't buy that' and prefer just to give an opinion. My opinion is that this is a treat.

I loved this production of The Sound of Music - it ...
I loved this production of The Sound of Music - it was not a glitzy Hollywood version - which I thought was more authentic. I was amazed by Kara Tointon's voice, I had never heard of her, living here in South Africa. But I am a great Julian Ovenden fan, going back to Foyle's War, and his performances with the John Wilson Orchestra. I truly was not a great fan of Julian's first CD because I think his voice is better suited to the old fashioned ballads of yesteryear. However, this DVD is delightful, and I am looking forward to receiving my signed copy of his new CD. He has worked hard at promoting it, so I hope it hits the charts.

I Love it!
As a young girl my father took me to see Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music, at the cinema. I fell in love with the music. I was informed it was a true story.I fell in love all over again many years later when I saw this on the TV for which I tape, I then thought Amazon may have it for sale and brought it back in July, I am glad I did it is so different, but the storyline is the same. I have watched it every weekend.Thank you.

The Americans did it better (sorry).
This is a very 'low energy' version. Everyone is a bit 'blah' in it. Kids fidget and look for prompting throughout. Elsa is neither mean nor sad. Max isn't funny...though his script is. Captain V.T is not....anything (?!). Maria is just dull, dull, dull. Non of the vocals are outstanding. I'm very disappointed. English theatre is supposed to be some of the best in the world but this falls miles and miles short. I wanted to love it but I was left just not caring.
