A classic worthy of the name
A film to rank with Field of Dreams, it reflects the passion of USA for baseball, and the triumph of the little guy.

Outstanding ....Simply ... Outstanding. Redford at his best
This is not a Baseball Film..... Baseball is the backstory ..... yet Redford brings alive the game of Baseball. That alone brings out the quality of this outstanding movie. Dont be mislead by the prominence of Baseball in the film, because the Baseball merely provides the backdrop to a wonderful story of personal relationships, that is as hard hitting as is the backstory. The combination of those two themes provides a wonderful film, extending through to - literally - the very last frame. Its little wonder Redford accepted the role in the Film, his character and temperament fitted his film role perfectly. If you are not a sports fan, have no concerns, the film is much deeper than a simplistic hack-baseball film, in reality its nothing to do with baseball, despite the game's prominence in the film. Its all about life's lost opportunities, and how, sometimes, despite all the Will in the World, we can all get dealt a short hand. Redford plays all the clever twists and turns with great aplomb as he portrays a man who is wracked by lost opportunities, and bad luck.Whether or not you are a Baseball fan does not matter, the latter is only the backstory to the extent, that even those not in love with the game, will still be entranced by the Film's journey. Superbly presented and acted by Redford, showing why his is held in such high regard in Hollywood. A not to be missed film, whether or not you are a Baseball fan..... a must see movie.

Always loved the movie, but sound quality was meh
As a streamed movie in SD, the sound was very uneven and mushy- detracting from the enjoyment of one of my all time faves

coulda been a contender...
I'm a film fan. Someone who watches a lot of films. But I used to play a lot of sport...and wasn't too bad at some of them. You don't have to be like me to enjoy this film...(which was hugely)...but it might help if somewhere along the lines you thought..."what if...?"For the intellect there is a raft of mythological/historical references...the lightning struck tree...Thor=God of Thunder and the hammer...a mighty strike... One critic has even pronounced on the fact that Roy is phonetical close to 'Roi'...sumat Frenchified for Royal....i.e. is Roy a prince among men?For the aesthete the sepia tones rival The Godfather in terms of 'Period Peice' and evocation of a dusty bygone era.For the actors workshop...well where do you start? For the naive child in everyone...triumph over adversity, the little guys win by playing well and fair, the bad guys lose, the greedy are defeated and all ends well.Watch it. Enjoy it. Love it...and you don't need to be sports fan let alone a baseball fan.I've only ever had the same level of 'warm and fuzzy' feeling after watching 12 Angry Men...

If you've seen the film don't buy the book
I like the basic yarn set out in the film version of this story with its life affirming message but was always disappointed in the film because Redford and Close thought it wise to play their parts spanning their age from 19-35 when Redford was already in his late 40s. It made what was a great story a bit, well... ridiculous. So I bought the book thinking it will be better; books always are, and the characters will be more believable. Well sad to say I couldn't get the film out my head and the Roy Hobbs character portrayed in the book is not likeable in the least. He hasn't learnt much from his days in the wilderness and (quite naturally) become bitter and shallow but his reluctance to talk about his past makes him seem mysterious and deep. I think the message of the book is your hero's are just human and just as likely to be disappointing. For me I don't really need that kind of story right now so didn't enjoy
