An antidote to dry academic cinema writing that demonstrates a real passion for the subject matter
Really enjoyed this. Having read a great deal around horror and exploitation cinema, I really enjoyed the the structure this book adopts; discussing the parallels between the mainstream and independent output of late 60s to the 80s. It's smart, well researched, engagingly written and deftly achieves the rare feat of being robust without being academic. Half of the pleasure comes from looking at the titles and trying to guess how on earth a link is going to be drawn between two seemingly completed unconnected films, but in every case I was convinced of the relevance of the comparison by the close of the chapter. Its rare to encounter writing on cinema that isn't bogged down in the tired tropes of textual analysis and manages to be be highly credible whilst being thoroughly entertaining.
