Great book
This book makes so much sense and is easy to understand. It is empowering, it gives you control over your body and the means of maintaining that. I have tried pilates and physio for back pain but they are not as effective as this. It is life changing.

If you are a physio or a pilates instructor, Its great to get out of your comfortzone!
I am a physiotherapist and a pilates instructor and have always been looking for rehabilitive forms of movement or exercise that restores healthy movement, and Feldenkrais has always been on my radar but I have never really looked at it as it didnt seem well enough researched. I bought this book as I met a pilates instructor who said she stopped teaching pilates and is now only teaching somatics, which made me interested! It has some parallels with pilates, and it also crosses with the current fascia research(although not indepth, more written in a "spiritual" way. It definitely gives you a different approach and different exercises that can help and challenge your clients. Especially ifyou have a class that has lots of pain and movement issues, I would definitely try this with them. I would say that the photos and the woonden mannequins, as mentioned before, are very unclear and leaves you literally in the dark on what should be done. It gives some more functional exercises, and just a completely different look at your clients, if you are ready for it. Waiting for some more research though as some of it seems slightly vague, but will definitely use it in my classes!

A Book We Should All Read
I have been having problems with one side of my pelvis and leg down into the foot for approx. 10years. I could tell that the muscles had seized up and were not working in the correct way. After spending 100's on various corrective measures and having numerous MRI scans and ex rays and being told that I would have to live with the problem, I have finally been able to sort the problem out myself with the use of this book. Within just a couple of days most of my muscle tension has gone and when I feel it returning I now know what to do.If you are experiencing any type of muscle problems or back, shoulder, neck pain I urge you to buy this book. At the worst it will be informative at the best it will solve your problems.The exercises are easy to follow and the movements are very small - just take your time and relax into them - feel how the body moves when you breathe correctly and use your breath in conjunction with the gently movements. Give yourself time to practice and enjoy the time you spend on yourself and you won't go far wrong.

Very interesting work...
I wasn't sure about this when I bought it. Having had a bad back for years and seeing several specialists, I read about somatics and though "pft, why not, nothing else has worked".It's actually been pretty brilliant. The pictures aren't great but having trained in Pilates, I think I understand the movements more, there are definite similarities.After doing the back extensor and flexor exercises, there is a tangible difference in my back pain and so much relaxation in the back muscles and even hip flexors. It's made a huge difference and I've only been doing them for about 3 weeks.Good work Mr Hanna!

Excellent exercise for those who hate to exercise and perfect for those who love to exercise.
If you are just looking for a daily routine that is easy to follow and will improve you whole body's health; relieve tension and reduce muscle pain and help you move more easily this book will do just that. It only works if you actually do the exercises regularly but they are meant to be done gently and slowly so perfect if you want to be healthier but hate gyms and sweaty workouts. The slower, the gentler the more effective :)This book has given my Yoga and Pilates teaching a whole new edge - and me a whole new outlet. I have been so impressed by how these exercise can release muscle tension and improve mobility I incorporate them in all my classes and have gone on to study the whole subject in more depth. If you teach Yoga or Pilates these exercises will put you ahead of the game.

A revelation!
I stumbled across this book – and hence the field of hanna somatics – whilst looking for books to help with a sciatica problem. It intrigued me, so I bought it, along with 3 books on the subject area from more traditional viewpoints – yoga and physio. The Somatics book arrived first, so I read it first. Six months later the other books remain untouched. There was no need of them: the theory explained in the somatics book explained my back problem, sciatica and other musco-skeletal pains so convincingly yet without being in any way simplistic.You can work on your own from the book (or apparently some of the exercise are on u-tube), but if your issues are somewhat complex you are best seeing a practitioner. Unfortunately, these are few and far between in the uk at present. However, I hope to see one myself, at some point, so perhaps I should do another review then!

Interessantissimo libro di esercizi di yoga somatico corredati da una bella carrellata di presentazione, approfondimento e studio di diversi casi affrontati da Hanna. Raccontando i casi che gli si sono presentati ha modo di esporre un ventaglio di tipologie di posture scorrette, le loro cause e soprattutto come curarle. Bello il modo in cui le tematiche sono affrontate: con andamento anche ironico e leggero. Lo sto ancora leggendo ma lo consiglio. Nota negativa per la bassa qualità dell'edizione, la copertina è fragile e si è rovinata in poco tempo. In generale poca qualità e accuratezza. Peccato! Questo libro meriterebbe una veste migliore.
