I don't know about slash proof but it isnt waterproof. I use a heavy duty bin liner inside mine. But having said that I absolutely love it. I fly quite often and I can fit everything I need in it. It is also standing up well to travel wear and tear and it is really comfortable to carry. Im really pleased with my purchase.

I used it for 5 days away, took a pair of trainers, pair of leggings, fleece jumper, socks and undies, 5 tops

Nope....only handle on the top and shoulder straps
