To begin with, from the very first page, Annie’s effortless and vivid narration takes you back into the busy streets of France in1963.Her writing is personal but analytical. Even though Annie does not talk about her feelings blatantly, you can feel the undercurrent all the time.Annie does not try to defend her stance for wanting an abortion. Annie is a woman making a choice and is willing to brave the consequences of that choice without sounding like a victim , crusader or a demon.As a woman I can understand the feeling. I will not talk about why she chose to terminate the pregnancy or her morals and I think that’s not what the book is about either.It’s a revisiting of a living nightmare – the shame, the fear , the panic. The dragging down fullness and the final emptiness that does not make your burden any lighter.Like much of the literature of those times, there is a certain rawness and harshness of the real life which could be unpalatable for some.Annie was from a working-class background and her bright mind was able to take her across the class divide where she was finally getting the respect of the upper classes because of her education. Venturing into the dark alleys for a clandestine abortion could be the end of Annie’s dreams and aspirations.Should a mistake at the age of 23 be the cause of her ruin and probable death?Annie leaves the door open for the reader to the small room where she undergoes the coarse ‘procedure’.Happening by Annie Ernaux is a fascinating book, will she make it … safely?

O que Annie Ernaux faz em seus livros é, no mínimo, mágica: transformar uma experiência pessoal numa meditação sobre a sociedade e um momento histórico. O aborto que ela vez em 1964 já aparecera em outras narrativas, mas nunca foi tão central como em Happening/L'Événement, em tradução de Tanya Leslie. Aqui, a descrição do evento todo é detalhada, desde a descoberta da gravidez indesejada, até as consequências do aborto clandestino, realizado por uma enfermeira, no apartamento desta, em Paris.Mas se o aborto é uma questão central – afinal é um evento definidor que a marcará para sempre – há uma outra preocupação aqui: a da escrita. Comentários metanarrativos aparecem discretamente, no começo, até que ganham um peso importante: qual o papel de uma escritora na sociedade – em especial de uma escrita memorialística. Mas, mais do que isso: como recontar as próprias lembranças – no caso, de quase meio século depois, orginalmente o livro foi publicado na França em 2001? Ela esconde os nomes das pessoas reais por iniciais, embora nem saiba que fim levaram. Ao mesmo tempo, ela se expõe em relação a um assunto delicado.Ela entra em detalhes gráficos impressionantes do aborto em si, e são tão fortes que realmente é impossível que ela tivesse esquecido desde que aconteceu. “Percebo que esse relato pode exasperar ou repelir alguns leitores, e que também pode ser rotulado de desagradável. Acredito que qualquer experiência, seja qual for sua natureza, tem seu direito inalienável de ser narrado. Não existe algo como uma verdade menor”, escreve.E em seus livros, não há verdades maiores ou menores – o que há são relatos de experiências pessoais a partir da memória (diários pessoais também são citados eventualmente), e a investigação de como uma mulher é tratada por uma sociedade, e como essa mulher enfrenta esse mundo que a oprime.Recentemente o livro foi adaptado para o cinema, e o filme, dirigido por Audrey Diwan, premiado com o Leão de Ouro no Festival de Veneza.

Bought as a gift but I'm assured its a fab book and much enjoyed.

Annie Ernaux has the most engaging writing style and manner of representing tragic as well as quotidienne events.

I havent read the book yey but FYI this is a very short book and when I opened the envelope, because the book cover is white it came all dirty... I was very upset... BUT I used an eraser to clean the dirt and it wasn't that bad... bit dissapointing though... all good now.
