Bringing Every Day6 to a close...
With their second album, Day6 bring their incredibly busy and ambitious 2017 to a close, collecting all of their singles released since July into one package. Moonrise is a much bigger release than Day6's last album, both in terms of how much you get on the disc and the physical design itself. I will say that while I do like Moonrise, the way this album is packaged compared to Sunrise is a lot more bulky and inconvenient. Whereas Sunrise came in a nice, compact box, Moonrise is much bigger, and kept sealed with a sticker and a fiddly cardboard tab. The thinness of the card and the empty space inside meant that it also arrived a bit creased and damaged. Still, you do get a fair amount of content inside, including another set of clear cover cards, two random photocards (I got Sungjin and Dowoon), a folding poster, and a fairly thick photobook. There's also the disc (which annoyingly is kept in a packet sealed shut again by a sticker), which has a total of eighteen tracks:1) Better Better - Opening the album with a rousing, uplifting rock ballad is always a good start. You can tell there's a lot of meaning packed into this song, with the way it describes someone in your life being the reason for getting up in a morning and carrying on. It's a really beautiful song.2) I Like You - The last single from the Every Day6 project, the first song I heard from the group and just from the fact I'm writing this review more than six months later, clearly it must have left an impression. It's another rock ballad with a catchy, memorable chorus, and the kind of music Day6 are most comfortable with.3) What Can I Do - I was sold on this track from the moment I heard its grungy, electric opening. What Can I Do has a really good flow to it, and the rhythm of the chorus is once again very catchy.4) I'll Remember - This track stood out to me largely due to its instrumentation. It's a bit of a different rock sound to what Day6 usually go for, and parts of it almost put me in mind of Irish folk music.5) Whatever! - A refreshing change, rather than being a love song, Whatever! is a perfect song to apply to those dull, boring classes at school where you can't help but wish that you were somewhere else. Practically everyone can relate to its lyrics, and it does a great job appealing to our desire for escapism.6) Be Lazy - A fun, funky song and as you can probably figure from the title, it's another relatable track. You can read this song several ways - either just a song about being lazy and putting things off for a while, or as a story of waking up in a morning (perhaps even next to someone according to the lyrics) and wanting to just stay under the sheets for hours on end.7) Hi Hello - A more gentle and relaxed listen. The minimal instrumentation and the breathy vocals give this song a breezy, dreamy feel. It's a really pleasant song.8) I Loved You - After a string of either fun or relaxing songs, I Loved You is a much sadder song. As with a lot of the songs penned by Young K, the lyrics are mature and meaningful, and I Loved You is probably one of the most profound songs on here.9) When You Love Someone - This has a similar feel to the previous track, but rather than being sad, it feels more bittersweet. The lyrics are once again profound and you can hear a lot of emotion in everyone's voices.10) All Alone - Perhaps the most laidback easy-to-listen-to song on here. All Alone has a minimalistic acoustic sound to it, relying mostly on the group's vocals, which appropriately for the title of the song, sound very singled out and isolated.11) Pouring - Pouring is again the kind of sound that Day6 feel most comfortable with. Not that that's a bad thing, and while I wouldn't call Pouring a standout from Moonrise, it's still an enjoyable listen.12) I Need Somebody - Excuse me for a moment while I gush how much I absolutely love this song. Although this wasn't my first Day6 song, this was the one that sealed the deal for me. Everything about it works. It starts out almost as a straight pop ballad, with beautiful vocals from Jae and Wonpil, until it reaches the chorus and explodes with the powerful "Why am I alone". I love everything about this song - the way it advances from straight up ballad into heavier rock, the purity in Wonpil's voice, the way more and more instruments are introduced, the unusual whistling heard before the second chorus, the little spasms of the electric guitar, and more. Not to mention, I relate to the lyrics on a personal level so much. This is far and away my favourite Day6 song, and one of my favourite songs in general, and I'm glad that it's become one of the group's most popular non-single tracks.13) I'll Try - Like I Need Somebody, I'll Try starts out almost a straight-up pop ballad but retains that feel for most of the song. This is the last entirely new song on the album, and it's a sweet, sincere way to finish, made sweeter still by the fact that Wonpil apparently wrote this song for his mother.14-18) Tracks 14-18 are the reworked and final versions of Day6's songs from their debut EP, including Colours, Like That Sun, Out Of My Mind, Habits and Freely. I'm afraid I haven't listened to the original versions of these songs so I can't comment on any differences, but like the rest of the album, they were all very enjoyable and up to the same usual high standard.Moonrise rounds off Day6's very busy and ambitious year on a high. Although I was late to the party, Every Day6 was an enjoyable project, and though you could tell the budget was stretched thin when it came to music videos, the fact that so much of their music was a hit rather than a miss is commendable. For me, I'd probably say that Sunrise has a slight edge over Moonrise, but when Moonrise has songs such as I Need Somebody, I Like You, Be Lazy, Whatever! and All Alone, it isn't one to miss.
