Marvel's Jessica Jones - Season 1 [DVD] [2016]

Alias
As with Daredevil, Jessica Jones is a tv show based on a Marvel comics character, and originally broadcast on Netflix. This is a four disc dvd containing all thirteen fifty min long episodes [approx.] spread over four discs, of the show's first season. As with Daredevil also, whilst this is set in the same fictional universe as Marvel comics movies, this is street level of that world. The kind of place where you don't see the Avengers or their foes. The series contains strong language, violence, and adult moments, so is strictly for grown up viewers. It's based upon a comic called Alias, which had a brief run early last decade. Being based on means it's a fresh take on the lead character, rather than an adaptation. It centres around Jessica Jones. A lady with special abilities. Dark trauma in her past. Who now works as a Private Detective, running a one person detective agency. She has one good friend, neighbours, and several associates. Said dark trauma has shaped her current life. She thought it was gone for good, but when it rears it's head again, she has a fight on her hands...You can't fault this for being quality drama. Krysten Ritter does some phenomenal acting in the lead - although Jessica is a hard character to like, so she may put some off - and David Tennant is brilliant in the form of her foe, a truly monstrous sociopath, but a wholly three dimensional character. You can't fault the quality of the characterisation and acting in the supporting cast either. But the focus is on the two leads as they clash in a dark psychological battle that you won't forget in a hurry. But there is one huge fault with the show, in that it's overlong at thirteen episodes. The plot does feel as if gets stretched out further the longer it goes on, and you might find yourself just wanting it to wrap things up quickly. This really would have perhaps worked better at eight or ten parts.Even so, the sheer quality of the cast and other aspects of the production do make it a five star release anyhow. Just be prepared for those two issues if watching .There are absolutely no extras on the discs.Language and subtitle options are:Languages: English, German, French.Subtitles: English, German, French.

DOWNBEAT & UNSETTLING - AS INTENDED
As superheroes go, Jessica Jones is not as expected. No arresting alias. No eye-catching costume. (Old jacket and jeans good enough for her.) Not the stunning good looks of her counterparts. Here is a streetwise toughie, abrasive and not particularly likeable.Any special powers are only gradually revealed. Emphasis is more on her work as a Private Investigator - headquarters (and home) a tatty apartment in need of a better front door, the block curiously seeming with barely any tenants.Another departure from norm is portrayal of the villain, she genuinely afraid of him. Kilgrave controls minds and once controlled hers, she traumatized by what he caused her to do a year earlier. She thought him dead, but he is back - obsessed with thoughts of again bending her to his will. New York's Hell's Kitchen provides the grim background for this psychological battle of wits between prey and predator, for thirteen episodes many to suffer en route.Krysten Ritter and David Tennant are powerful as the adversaries, theirs a conflict for real. In fact there is much throughout to impress: bar owner Luke, who is not as he seems; Malcolm, Jessica's druggie neighbour who develops interestingly.Whether enjoyed or not, there can be no denying the creators have succeeded with what they set out to do. Raw and genuinely disturbing, here is a series welcomed by many as a worthy addition to arguably an overstocked genre.

This series introduces new Marvel characters called Defenders which are humans that have powers which are more toned down compared to the Marvel avenger characters. The main character is Jessica Jones whose powers are useful in her work as a private investigator but she has a drink problem related to her traumatic past in which she came up against a villain with powers of mind control. The villain is played by the excellent David Tennant. The series has a good story line which revolves around the battle she has with the villain who she comes across when investigating a case.

Great Show!
This show is a real thrill ride! I enjoyed all of it. I won't get into the story as others I am sure did. But the actors did an incredible job and are very convincing. David Tennant is a stand out. Krysten Ritter develops into Jessica Jones very nicely as the series goes on. The best compliment I can give the show is that I binged watched it and now need a season 2!

4 stars only.
This is a Blu-Ray review. Not a bad series, very adult content like sex scenes, rape scenarios and fighting violence but it never really captured me... E.g. I might watch season 2 if there is one but I'm not bothered if I don't.Oh and no bonus features of any kind!

Quality!!
An unusual and pleasingly standout direction for Marvel. What makes Jessica Jones great is that the tone is moody and the vibe is dark, gritty and honest. This show is very character driven and focusses on an ex-superhero, with a blighted past. Jessica Jones doesn't pull any punches and makes for a compelling watch whether you like Marvels genre of entertainment or not. Also, Krysten Ritter is awesome as a great but flawed/reluctant hero and it's great to see a strong female lead from Marvel... No offence Widow!

Very good show!
It's a great TV show that's really well done. David Tennant totally nails this one too! A release I had been anticipating for a very long time. Well worth buying.
