Detailed look at British-Indian relations in the 1600s
Good book, maybe too mired in details that are extraneous . Sir Thomas Roe was a contradictory figure and it was interesting to learn more about his role in opening up India for the British.

Even for a layman a great historical overview of Britains first embassy to India
The writing is fantastic, among the best. Great research, overlapping the English aspect of times and the Mughal court, giving a elucidating overview of the inter cultural and political interactions. Full of entertaining details.

horribly overwritten
I'm only 60 pages in, so maybe I'll alter my opinion later. But so far I find this book horribly overwritten. The author seems to feel she must include every minor detail that she has ever annoted in her research. Plowing through all this is so tedious that I am already skipping paragraphs and even entire pages. In my opinion, these first 60 pages could easily have been condensed into 20 or so without missing anything of major importance. And the story hasn't even arrived in India yet. Hopefully this will get better. We don't need an endless catalog of minor characters who will only show up for a few sentences and never be heard from again, just to give this book the appearance of being scholarly.

Scholarship at its best.
I enjoyed the detailed research and flow of this book. The book brought the overlapping of cultures to life and Master Roe. Well worth the read.

East Indian First Foray in India
An amazing record of Thomas Roe’s trip to India to get exclusive rights for trading in India. A failed attempt stonewalled by Shah Jahan. Great read of the times of Jahangir era
