Product Description A ghost stranded in New York City is determined to communicate with the woman he loves. He teams with a "psychic" who is amazed to discover her powers are authentic when she becomes his reluctant ally as he masters the skills of the spiritual world. The winner o f 2 Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress. From .co.uk The biggest hit of 1990, Ghost is part comedy, part romance, part supernatural thriller. Patrick Swayze, previously best known for Dirty Dancing, stars as Sam, the banker who is killed following a mugging. Caught in a limbo between here and the afterlife, he uses Whoopi Goldberg's fake psychic as an intermediary to warn wife Molly (Demi Moore) that his death was no accident but a murder and that she is in danger too. Ghost's original popularity and notoriety originally arose not from its dealings with the supernatural but the scene involving Moore fondly astride her potter's wheel fashioning a somewhat phallic-shaped vase, with Swayze fondly astride her. So infamous did this scene become that it's now more likely to raise a chuckle than a sultry sigh. As for the rest of the movie, it still somehow manages to engage despite the awkward juxtaposition of lachrymose melodrama and zaniness. Demi Moore, whose massive Hollywood success was always a mystery to some, is a little flat as the tomboy-coiffed Molly, her tears occasionally seeming onion-induced. Swayze, however, delivers as Sam while Whoopi Goldberg turns in the best performance of her career, delivering the requisite zip and sass to what otherwise might have been a morose movie. On the DVD: Though well restored, DVD enhancement has only served to emphasise the slightly quaint feel of the special effects here--Ghost was made just prior to the digital era. Otherwise, this is a good package and an essential purchase for fans. There's a 22-minute featurette, "Remembering the Magic", in which scriptwriter Bruce Joel Rubin explains that the film was inspired by the scene in Hamlet in which the Prince meets his Father, and how initially appalled he was that his masterpiece of the supernatural was to be directed by Jerry Zucker, previously responsible for Airplane!. They also reveal that Tina Turner was originally cast for the Goldberg role. Zucker and Rubin team up for a funny commentary track. --David Stubbs P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); From the Back Cover Think of the most touching love story you ever saw. Think, too, of the brightest comedy, the most astonishing supernatural tale and a sleek mystery-thriller. Did you come up with four separate films? Or are you among the millions of fans and critics who've discovered Ghost, the #1 film of 1990? Ghost will surprise you, delight you, make you believe. Patrick Swayze plays a ghost who teams with a psychic (Academy Award(r) winner Whoopi Goldberg) to uncover the truth behind his murder - and rescue his sweetheart (Demi Moore) from a similar fate. Love can sometimes live beyond all boundaries...
At least, that's what 'Ghost' is trying to tell us. If love is strong enough, it can exist even after death, even when all seems lost. Of-course, there's no real reassurance anything exists after death, including love, but since people need desperately to believe there is still something out there left of their soul after the body fails to continue its journey upon earth, it's understandable why this movie suggests that some souls might still wander among us as ghosts - especially when their end wasn't exactly expected. Either way, whether you chose to believe or not, this is simply terrific entertainment, and one that can no doubt be considered a classic these days.I don't know why I didn't get to watch 'Ghost' earlier, but as they say, it's better late than never. For the few of those who haven't seen it yet (mainly the younger generation, I assume) I'll just say there is a big chance this is the best Demi Moore\Patrick Swayze movie you'll get to see, and I'm still waiting for something else to surpass the hypnotizing tension and mystery atmosphere offered here, the fact Patrick Swayze's immense suffering feels so real even though in his new form he's not suppose to suffer any more; Also, you'll get to see Whoopi Goldberg in one of her best roles up until now, and personally I feel that here she even exceeds expectations and is better than what she did with her most famous role as Dolores Van-Cartièr\Sister Mary Clarence just a couple of years later (but, if you'll watch closely, I quite sure you'll notice that her celebrated movies about nuns took their inspiration from an interesting scene here).I must mention the guy that plays Carl (don't remember the actor's name at the moment, but he's simply great). He's doing a fine job as the best friend of Swayze's character who betrays his faith and stubs him in the back (well, something quite close to it, anyway). I felt a bit sorry for him at his loss at first, but as the story developed and the truth was exposed in all its ugliness I hated him with a reason.Beside those wonderful actors, notice the one who briefly plays the subway ghost. A more tortured soul, so filled with agony and despair even after death, I haven't witnessed in a very long time, or should I say I never witnessed in my life...To conclude things, you really should not miss this movie, by all means take your time to get to know what the power of true love that lasts beyond the limits of life is, and by the way, if you like this one, make sure as well to listen to the original cast recording of the musical based on the same story - made years later, and through the music you'll relive the sorrow and deep emotions of all the people involved in the story of 'Ghost', a story that seems as fresh and honest (albeit not exactly real in places) as it seemed back then in 1990, when the wonderful feature first reached the big screens and captured the hearts and imagination of millions around the globe. Not just your average ghost story.

Poor Blu Ray transfer
One of my favourite films. Was sorely disappointed with the Blu Ray quality! So much pixeling, and visible lines through lighter scenes. In fact I really wouldn't waste your money if you already own the special edition on DVD. I am not overly fussy, but I really felt like this was not in HD. The sound was poor, I had to turn the volume up so high, the picture to me was very patchy, you could see the pixels. I have found a few Paramount Bly Ray movies from the 80s and 90s look rather poor compared to other older Blu Rays which have been a great transfer. I own Ghost on DVD, it really was a let down paying out for this on Blu Ray.

The perfect movie
I loved this film when it was released, but then I haven't seen it for a long time. Re-watching it I realised that this story will never age, it still feels fresh and perfect. The acting is wonderful, story is great and the song of Unchained Melody is such a fantastic choice that anyone who saw this will recognise it instantly.

Now do you believe in ghosts?
Now do you believe in ghosts?Sam Wheat is killed during a botched mugging but his spirit is stuck in spirit world limbo. Watching over his left behind lover, Molly, it becomes clear that there is far more to his killing than it at first seemed. Enlisting the help of kooky psychic Oda Mae Brown, Sam must protect the now in danger Molly whilst simultaneously getting to the bottom of his murder.Ghost is a multi genre offering, not just purely a romantic weepy that its detractors would have you believe. Romance, fantasy, mystery, thriller, comedy and no little bit of spooky shenanigans all fuse together to form Jerry Zucker's monster box office smash of 1990. Made for $22 million, it has gone on to make a staggering $517 million worldwide, proof positive that the public by and large will buy into a simple story as long as it's put together well with the afore mentioned elements. The central theme of true love reaching from beyond the grave to prove itself eternal is something that most folk find endearing in a non sickly kind of way, with it naturally helped by having a cast list firing on all cylinders.Tho Jerry Zucker's (Airplane/Top Secret) direction is uneven, it's to be expected when this is after all his first solo feature, he is however well served by his stars. Patrick Swayze wasn't wanted for the part of Sam Wheat, but he fought tooth and nail for the project and nailed the role with gusto and emotionally driven force. Demi Moore as Molly was never lovelier, trimmed short hair to reveal a gorgeous young face, her feeding off of Swayze's energy provides the film with its credible impetus. Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae turns in an Oscar winning performance, wonderfully funny, yet also at times sympathetic without over stretching the essence of the piece, while Tony Goldwyn and Vincent Schiavelli also provide two memorable (for the right reasons) performances. The effects work of course looks amazing for its time, none more so when the dark side of death is fully realised via shadows in the films most creepy moments, whilst the editing (Walter Murch) and screenplay (Oscar winning by Bruce Rubin) is from the top draw.So yes it's safe to say that me, a butch middle aged bloke, is personally a fan of Ghost, there's a little bit of corn in there, especially in one particular dance sequence, but mainly the film is a pure delight. Helped by Maurice Jarre's hauntingly sweet score and boosted by the use of the magnificent Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers, Ghost is a film to revel in if you are prepared to let it get deep inside of you. 8/10
