This tamper has a dual spring - one that controls the outer spillage collar, and then another one that controls the tamper itself. What this means is that when you tamp down the coffee, the anti-spill collar hits the edge of the portafilter first. Then you continue to push until you feel the spring for the tamper start to give. As long as you stop before you get where the spring doesn't give any more, you will get a consistent tamp that they say is at the correct 30lb level. I don't know how you would measure that, but it takes a solid push to get the second spring to start giving, so am guessing it's in that range. Once again, the key thing is that you will get the same tamp every time, so you can better dial in your shots.The face of the tamper has concentric rings perhaps 1/8 inches apart, maybe a bit less - so it leaves a circular tamp that looks like good. The brushed silver (colored) handle looks very nice, and it also has a knurled ring to help you grip it better. I am very pleased with this tamper - it's exactly what I want, and as such I think it is a very good value, especially if you are trying to get consistency in your espresso shots. I definitely recommend this.

I recently switched to a bottomless stainless steel portafilter replacing a plastic-lined filter that came with my espresso machine.In addition to the benefit of avoiding hot coffee strained through plastic, there was a noticeable upgrade in flavor.However, extracting a consistent cup takes a lot of practice and patience.What I have found is that, in addition to using a fresh grind, a good distributor and tamper is a must.The challenge with using a manual tamper is creating a leveled pack. With an unleveled pack, you sometimes end up with water disproportionately funneled to one side of the portafilter.This spring-loaded tamper fixes this problem with consistent press.The outer ring sits directly over the portafilter edge, acting as a leveler. When pushed down, the inner tamper disc presses down on the coffee grind evenly and leveled, each and every time.Small complaint: The tension in the spring requires force. But I am guessing this will loosen with added use.

The tamper for me feels good in the hand. The handle bulb doesn't make my palm feel like i need to get a better grasp when I'm pressing down. It's a good weight that I don't have to do much to begin with while laying down the tamp on the grinds. The spring action is good and on 0e complete, no large recoil.
