Essential reference for the home library
I broke my wrist several weeks ago and decided to purchase this book to deepen my understanding of the healing process, and to hopefully gain some useful insights into rehabilitation to speed my recovery. The book is a sturdy hardback book (you'll need to read it on a table/flat surface with a paperweight to hold the pages down, if you have a broken wrist like me!) which is divided into three sections: pain, injury, and rehab.I read the first two sections on pain and injury which make up the first 100 or so pages of the book. I then read the first 40 or so pages of the rehab section which covers the key principles of rehab. The rest of the book is then divided into sections on different parts of the human body. I only read the 'Wrist & Hand Protocols' chapter as that was the only one relevant to me.On first appearance, this may seem like a dense medical textbook, but it's actually very easy to read, and everything is clearly explained and illustrated in layman's terms.I had an intuitive understanding that it was important for me to keep exercising/moving notwithstanding my injury, but this book has given me the language and understanding to articulate why it is important. There's a temptation with injuries to just do nothing to avoid any further damage but that can lead to atrophy and deconditioning. The healing phase is broken down into three phases, with the first being the inflammation or "pain management" phase, which is typically within the first 3 days of an injury occurring. This is when it's important to rest and to manage the pain, so no further damage is caused. The second phase is the maturation phase which is typically the first 3 weeks of the injury and this is when you start to explore what range of motion you have available, by "poking the bear".The third and final phase is the remodelling phase where you start resistance training to rebuild your capacity and strength. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, don't be put off by the term "resistance training". It's not about deadlifting your personal best in a gym. One of my exercises involved purchasing a cheap finger exerciser device-a plastic band which I wrap around my fingers and thumb, before splaying and extending my fingers. The protocols chapter for the injury you have, provides a range of different resistance exercises.I can't praise this book highly enough. It's very educational and has taught me a lot of new things. I found the section on "cross-transfer" particularly fascinating, which is something Josh Waitzkin discusses regarding his broken right hand, in his book 'The Art of Learning', although he doesn't use that term. The idea is that by strengthening the part of your body that isn't injured, it primes your nervous system for when you eventually use the injured side. When this book first arrived, I was wracking my brains thinking where had I heard the name Glen Cordoza before, and then I realised I already had one of his books: 'Becoming a Supple Leopard' by Kelly Starrett, which is also an excellent addition to the home library. My cast isn't due to come off until next week but I have full confidence my road to recovery will be a swift one, with the knowledge I have gained from this book. Hopefully I won't injure myself again but if I do, this book will be the first thing I turn to.

Phenomenal book
This book is a great achievement. It’s not cheap but is a phenomenal resource if you’re constantly getting injuries like me. Seemingly every single part of the body from jaw pain and neck related headaches down to your big toe are covered with very detailed three stage protocols for each one with excellent photographs. The first part of the book is all about injuries and how tissues recover etc. Pretty much a one stop shop. Worth the money.

Probably the best book in this area
Was looking forward to this book as been following Dr Tom Walter’s and his Rehab Science platforms across social media. As a Sports Therapist/Soft Tissue Therapist, this book has been an incredible resource for me to enable my clients to recover from challenges quicker. The programs are easy to follow, well illustrated and Dr Walter’s gives an easily understood overview of the conditions before taking you through the phases of recovery. Highly recommended for all physical therapists who want to ensure their patients recover well and quicker.

Must have for self treatment
I purchased the physical book but then wanted to have it all the time since i get injured very easily and bought in kindle version, it is very simple and effective you need to stick what it says and you would know your body more and it will help you to understand the injury and how to treat and how to protect it, i had golfers elbow and hamstring problem and tried everything but after buying this book it worked, you need to treat your injuries in phases and give it an enough time to heel and challenge/strengthen and this book is a great guide to teach you, covers most of the injuries. Dr. Tom Walters is a gem very knowledgeable i follow her on his instagram as well very informative and helpful

Excellent book
Just about to finish my sports massage course . I bought this book from what i have seen of this of this therapist online. I liked his approach it was a nice fresh way to look at things . The book arrived its very well presented and very good quality from the binding to the paper for the pages inside (alot of Anatomy and physiology books etc are not brilliant quality). This has become one of the 1st books i look at to reference to and look at understanding a subject area about pain and rehab. It is easy to understand but also goes a little theory into the subject. But not too much to confuse you . As i am on my last paper on rehab . So this is being very well read at the moment . Well done Tom walters . I hope you get the plaudits you deserve.....

Great material - shame the seller didn’t care!
The book content is great, useful information and simple information and instructions for the rehab. Great for anyone in the industry or interested in keeping themselves maintained or recovering from injury.Unfortunately the people selling or packing the book didn’t take the same care!I treat my books with respect and none of my dust covers for the hardbacks look like this one even after several years (beyond the marks on the spine from reading). The other packaging used for shipping was fine, no dents or damage. I was then surprised to find the cover damaged on a book costing nearly £50!
