i suppose it might depend upon how its used.
used one of these pads on a favourite old jumper starting to fray at the elbow - it didnt stay on for very long though - although im not the best with a iron so there may have been some user error...

They work absolutely fine, easy to stick on and I've also sewn them (belts n braces!).

I would definitely not recommend this. I bought it as it said it was iron on but on the packet it says you may need to sew on to reinforce and in reality it did not stick at all. I also ordered four packets but was only sent one and so far the customer service has been dreadful and I'm still trying to sort it.
