Islamic women in the West need to speak up.
This book left it's mark on me YEARS after I had read it and it started to gather dust on the bookshelf. What broke my heart is the comments I got from Islamic women in England when I tried discussing it. Whilst they all agreed that it was a heartbreaking story at the end of the day they either shrugged their shoulders and thanked their lucky stars that it didn't happen to them or they berated me for not understanding what a woman's honour means in their culture. A few were embarassed that she dared to speak out against ISLAM !!!! This is a shocking story but I would guess that there are many more similar stories, the only difference being that the future author refuses to speak out.Islamic women may have more rights in the West but all over the world their Islamic sisters are suffering greatly under the guise of religion. If the rest of the world is to understand this religion and give it the respect it probably deserves then women who have a voice must speak up.For the reviewer that said the veil is what God wants Islamic women to do, I wholeheartedly disagree. That message came from the prophet ( a human being born of a woman) NOT GOD. He told women to protect their honour by covering their modesty from men's prying eyes, hence why so many woman cover themselves. I for one can never understand why a man can't respect a woman without a veil by turning his head the other way. Would this not be a true test of a man ?

Really easy to read sad story
One of the sadest stories I have ever read abotu a girl who ended up as an enforced child bride in the Yemen. The book was shocking in so many ways, especially because the girl Zana was sold to marriage along with her younger sister by their father before they were fifteen years old.I even googled the author after reading the book - her sister didn't get a chance to escape from her enforced marriage yet. Se has several children with a husband who abuses her. Really shocking, sad story. Loved the book which was easy to read. Perfect for holiday reading.

Great book but drags on.
I feel like the story dragged on a little. At some points I lost interest in reading. The book is great though. On the parts that didn't drag I found myself glued to the book!!! I could not stop in some sections until I finished it. All in all the book got me interested in finding out what happened to Nadia and her children next as I've read on the internet that Nadia didn't want to come down as she was happy all along and that Zanas story was twisted. I don't no what to believe from it all. But I think maybe because zana could escape and get freedom and share her story.. Nadia became bitter and used to the fact that she wasn't going to get out anytime soon and if she did her babies would have to be left behind.

Still one of my faves
One of my favourite books in this genre. I read it when it first came out at W H Smiths (there was no amazon in those days)!...so i ordered it again after so many years. As soon as i started reading it i knew why its one of my favourites...its a very heartbreaking story but filled sheer determination, hope and faith. It definantly has substance

Fantastic book! Have no second thoughts and just go for it!
The book left such an impact on me that I took a few days to come out of the world of Yemen and back to reality. Very nicely written book.
