Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery

Fantastical take on historical horror!
Slewfoot was a delightful read, which I found impossible to put down. The story was engaging, the main character was easy to connect with and the horrors of being a woman during these times were far scarier than any supernatural element added. Agatha was an easy protagonist to root for. There was enough mystery and intrigue to keep me hooked until the last act when it became somewhat of a more predictable, revenge story. Brom’s writing is to the point, visceral, and just as captivating as his illustrations. I look forward to reading his other stories. You won’t regret picking up this book that lives up to the hype. A rare 5 star read for me. 🕷️

Absolutely fantastic
Great plot, fleshed out characters, lovely designs, good pacing. This is one of my top books of the year, and a great read for October. Only complaint is that Samson and Abitha had so much chemistry that I wish they'd fallen in love, maybe. Otherwise, amazingly written and woefully underrated.

Fun and kitschy in the best way possible.
Engaging from start to finish. A tantalizing story of magic incorporating tropes in a horror meets studio ghibli sort of way. i was on the edge of my seat as i followed the story and couldn't put it down until i discovered the ending. A satisfying and fun Halloween read.

Great Book!
This book started off creepy, then went into a slow build, then switched in to a fast paced more thriller-style book. It was a great setup that I really enjoyed. Perfect for your fall reading and/or if you’re someone who has a knowledge/love of the Salem witch trials as this book runs very parallel to some of that history.

Kinda weird
So…. This book definitely wasn’t really my thing. I read it because it was voted as our September read for the book club I’m in, so it’s not something I would have normally chosen on my own. Which is fine, because I’m trying to branch out and try new things. But it just wasn’t for me in the end. I was really confused most of the time to be honest, lol. It did get pretty interesting towards the end, probably around the last 80 pages or so. But the whole story was really odd to me. I did feel like they were a few decent themes in the book, but it’s something I would only recommend to certain people.

gotta push through to the last 1/3
When I first started this book I was sure I was going to hate it. But the more I read the more invested into Abitha I became. She is definitely that bitch and I love her. I also fell in love with Samson. I cheered for them, cried for them, was scared for them. It’s been a long time since I read a book where I became so invested in the characters.I also listened to some of the audiobook and it was incredible. The narrator has a beautiful accent and she made the story come to life. The only reason it’s not a 5 star read is because it took awhile to get into and the chapters are super long. But a solid 4.5 stars all day. Will definitely reread this one.

Beautiful words
I was hooked from page one. The story is so beautifully written. The writing style is just flowy and captivating. The story is a good one. One of my favorite reads of the year. I couldn't put this one down. Chores be damned. I had reading to do. Finished this in 2 days. Highly recommend.

Beautifully Crafted Art
The only way to describe this book is beautifully written. The prose is like a song that captures you with its melody and keeps you utterly captivated by the experience. The characters that populate the pages, both those who are good and those who are not, have what feel like moving personalities. Each character is brought to life by their thoughts, speech, and deeds. They are written so well that you feel as if you actually know them and form an almost bond with who they are.The story itself takes its time and builds the settlement of Sutton as if this place and people were real rather than a work of fiction. You can lose yourself and feel the struggle of the Puritan life and what it would have felt like being an outsider in such a religiously strict and demanding life. The tension and horror of the story also slowly builds as the myths and magic come to life. It also comes from different angles, not just the supernatural horror. Terror in the form of the brutality of the vengeful and usually false hysteria of the witch trials adds another layer to the tension and story. The slow pace of the story never feels slow. It feels perfectly paced right to the much faster paced climax. This phenomenal book leaves you feeling less like you read it and more like you experienced it. As my first book by Brom, it has set his bar really high for me. I can't wait to see what experiences his other books have in store for me.

Loved it.
I’m a Brom fan so might be biased here. Great book, well written, get the hard cover for the art work alone.

great main female character
Abitha was an amazing character!she was vulnerable and emotional and SO strong, even putting herself at risk when she had to stand up for herself and others. This is how I like main female characters, not just super strong-I-don't-need-help kind of character or the the soft girl needing to be rescued, she was layerd and flawed, soft but brave, and always pushing trying to do what she thought needed to be done.

Bom pra ela
